Official Pulmonary Critical Care 2017-2018 Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Rejection UAB, Standford.

What else was on the paper?

USMLE Step 1,2,3 scores.

Then many lines for the interviews to take notes while interviewing.

Mainly discussed research and what I wanted from the fellowship and career.

Also asked what I did for fun.

Invite from Aventura Hospital (pulm only). I also have heard from few more DO PCCM programs. Anyone out there has any perspective on the DO fellowship? Are they viewed equally after graduating and job opportunities?

Hey Im looking for someone to switch my pccm at ecu vidant? I ve oct 3rd and want either oct 4th or 17 or 18. Let me know if its possible for anyone!

with PCCM being as competitive as it is this year, I'm seeing multiple in-house candidates at my interviews. Any guess as to how programs compare in house candidates with the rest? Am I automatically at a disadvantage? Is there any cap to how many in house candidates programs use to fill their program/

I had October 16th that I cancelled right now. You should try now and see if they have openings
Is anyone able to switch ECU/Vidant medical center iv pccm with me? Have oct 3rd want either Oct 17th or 18th Thanks!

Does anyone have any idea about the UCSF Fresno program?

I've only gotten 1 bite so far from Inspira Vineland. I know a bunch were reviewing in September, so I was hoping for a few more, including Palmetto (I wonder if the hurricane delayed them though). Also there's a new PMCC at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point that started taking applications on 9/1/17.

Yes please let's start anonymous reviews

This is my review for Palmitto health /USC:
Pros:
Good clinical exposure.
Have U/S institute and good U/S training.
Seems to be friendly young faculty.
Balanced work load ( you get free weekends as you just cover 24 hours call once a month in a weekend so you can moonlight in weekends or simply enjoy it and relax)
Cons:
New program ( this is their second year into PCCM , before that used to be only Pulmonary and the program started 2007).
Not enough ECMO exposure.
No lung transplant.
No research ( the program is heavily clinically oriented).
Young Faculty so no enough experience.

Any insight on University of Illinois Chicago and west Virginia University program?
How are they clinically and do they allow moonlighting on J1 visa?

WVU- 30 bed MICU. Residents run the service. Fellows literally supervise. Clinically oriented- no to lil research. No transplant exposure. Problem is they have 4 full time faculty. They are having trouble recruiting more faculty. Its a University town-lots of out doors. For partying big cities nearby pitt, DC etc.

For training, i would rate it 5/10 because of less faculty, less procedures, minimal research and small town.

How many interviews did people get at this point? I got only 6 which includes 2 pulm only, can we expect anything more at this point? Thanks

St. Louis University

Thanks

What are your career goals and do you have any geographic preference for future jobs.

A program that doesnt offer intubation training but good research opportunities would set you up for research focused academic practice or outpatient pulmonary with or without a subspecialty focus. None of the programs you listed has any significant national brand name appeal so your best chance at an academic job would be local.

Orlando health - pulm only
Pro:
Beautiful facilities with a lot of faculty and research support, protected time for lectures, lots of procedures, faculty and PD seems nice and super approachable.
Cons:
New program - 2nd year in. Have to reapply for CCM 1 yr program.

Pure CCM ,,, Geisinger vs albert einstein montefiore, any inputs ?

Anyone have input or care to share their interview experience at medical college of Wisconsin and mount Sinai CCM only?

St Louis U and Kansas U are phenomenal! ASU-Tucson is a very nice program, but seems to favor internal candidates quite a bit. Temple seems more academically oriented, no intubations is a drawback for me -- however a lot of places w/o intubations even you can be proactive and get some experience, so if the program is awesome otherwise, can't comment on it as I don't know much there.

US IMG with competitive scores, several abstracts / few accepted for competition, publication, chief resident at a community hospital program.

Ended up with 3 interviews -- surprisingly at places I think are more competitive than my rejections.
Just hoping for the best, would not be the end of the world working as a hospitalist for a year and reapplying.

I agree no intubation is a drawback but at the same time they do a lot of advanced bronch procedures and lots of transplants both not offered at SLU or KU

Any input about Cook county , university of Oklahoma , Univ of Toledo , Jackson Memorial Univ of Miami, Univ of Tennessee / Memphis ? Interview experience is appreciated .

No intubation is a big drawback for critical care training

Be aware that unless you want to pursue lung transplant as a career, it offers almost zero benefit for your future practice.

General sense is that Temple will probably offer the most opportunities for future academic jobs . But not being comfortable with intubations means it will be difficult for your to find a community based critical care career

I would go to Temple if I can, intubations can be learned if your interested in learning like doing an elective with anesthesia etc. You ll get to see advanced cases they do literally everything ecmo, transplants, vads etc

Cook county- strong clinically, good exposure, Charm of Chicago. You ll be an amazing clinician once you graduate. Surprisingly its not as malignant as you would think when you iv there

OU- good program, good city. Good exposure. No ecmo. Lil tranplant exposure.

Uni of tennesse- malignant, fellows were unhappy. Hand writing of notes in 1 of the 3 hospitals. Area not safe surrounding the hospital.

Uni of Toledo- interviewing there later but heard good things.

Jackson memorial- not applicable

Does anyone have any insight about Washington hospital medical center vs gwu?

Rejection Montefiore...I thought they would be done sending invites and rejections by now.

Rejection from Univerisity of Nebraska and Jeff. The Nebraska letter was really nice though.

any one heard from LOMA LINDA ?
any Prematch offers in CCM YET ?

no more invites for the year...seems like its over this year.

Yeah I think the fat lady sung and then went home to have dinner.

4 interviews only - one of the places I interviewed at filled internally out of the match. So in reality, only three shots.
This is worse than applying for residency.

I thought that they could not do that? :O

How did you know they filled internally , was it just CC program ?

So at several of the interviews I went to for PCCM 3 years, I ran into a surprisingly large number of non-traditional applicants who were already boarded in IM and about to finish another fellowship and enter PCCM boarded in other specialties! 2 were ultrasounded boarded, 2 were sleep, 3 were renal (!!), 2 were ID, 1 was cardiology (!!). The renal, ID, and cardiology guys all were published in Pubmed when I talked to them. Boy this field has seemingly gotten more attractive and competitive.
