Hey y’all, I know everyone's cycle is different, but I don't really have any pre-med friends or recent MDs from TX to ask about their experiences. So I figured I'd reach out here.

I applied in May/early June and got 2 iis from pretty good TX schools in July. Since then… nothing in August. It's confusing because I thought I had good momentum early on, but now I'm not hearing back from schools, even ones with less competitive stats.

For those who've applied to Texas med schools (or are current MDs who went through TMDSAS), when did you receive the bulk of your interview invites? Is this hiatus in ii normal? Thank you!
 
I think it’s a pretty normal cycle.
What will happen soon is after the October 1 deadline for TMDSAS primary submission, all the schools will know that they have seen the whole pool of students for this year.
They will assess and choose the ones they would like to interview in the coming months.

This is my first cycle applying and no one in my family is in medicine, so I frankly feel like I’m going into this whole process a little blind. The SDN threads have been super helpful through the last couple of months, so thank you to everyone posting here!

I won’t lie, but I’m starting to get a little anxious about my app cycle. I am a Texas resident, and I submitted all of my secondaries (only applied to Texas) between July 22nd-July 24th (4 weeks after receiving them). I have a 4.0/513, with 2000+ clinical hours and a research pub as a quick summary. I don’t know if I'm getting worried pre-maturely, but it's been complete radio silence up till now- I haven't received any IIs or a secondary from Dell.

I've seen similar questions on this thread, but those were some time ago and I was wondering if there is any cause for concern yet, or to just keep waiting it out. If anyone with similar stats applied the previous cycle, when did you get the majority of your interviews? Is no secondary from Dell at this point a soft rejection?

I think there are probably half the invitations sent out already, so still time for you.
A couple of things to check, did you take CASPer and send it to schools, and did you ask AAMC to release your MCAT score to TMDSAS? It doesn’t get sent automatically like it does to AMCAS schools.

Yes to both! I unfortunately only scored 2nd Q on casper so I wonder if that has anything to do with my lack of IIs?

I’ve also received confirmation that my app is complete from all of the schools I’ve applied to. I’m assuming this means that I’m being considered for interviews correct?

Considering that it’s mid-September, do you think that this is abnormal?

Here are the numbers, which I gave in reply to another SDN member with your exact question:
in the EY 2024 stats for TMDSAS,
4878 Texans applied to TMDSAS schools
3677 interviewed (meaning 1201 got no interviews at all)
2076 matriculated to a TMDSAS school.

Having 2 interviews by early September is better than most
 
For non-MMI interviews should thank you letters be uploaded to the secondary website similar to other documents or should we attempt to contact our interviewers directly via email?

Overall, it's still early in the process. You've done all you can so far, so there is nothing to do but wait. We're all in the same boat so we know it's easier to say than do. Your stats are good and there are definitely people with similar stats that have received IIs. But the vast majority of IIs that have been given out so far have been given to folks with stats better than that. Yours will come.

My bestfriend did a Septmber 6 MCAT last year. He got a 504 MCAT and got accepted to UTMB with a tuition scholarship. He sent a follow-up email to all of the TMDSAS schools and his other OOS medical schools just stating "I got my MCAT back today and please let me know if it is updated on your end". He said he did the update email to really just say hey look at my application again and he started getting interview invites in October and November. So I think it is very possible.
 
Is anyone else really struggling to differentiate between some of these schools? I feel like a lot of the interview presentations are very similar, and the main way I'm distinguishing between them is location, quality of clinical rotations, and my perception of their reputation/resources available to students. All of them talk about mentorship, a collaborative culture, research opportunities, cutting-edge curriculum, etc. but I know they have important differences. Does anyone have insight into what really sets each one apart from the rest??

I'm struggling trying to get an interview invite lol. But seriously, I understand what you mean from the interviews I've had OOS. For me it feels like I fall in love with each one after I go.
 
Are the "meet and greet" sessions the night before each interview truly optional? I have a 6 pm course and it's not feasible for me to not attend it every time I have an interview.

You have to read each email to the last line to see if a session is mandatory.
Most will call it a pre-interview social , meet & greet, if it is optional.
There are a couple of TMDSAS schools where you must attend something a different day than your interview, and those will clearly state it as required or mandatory

Hello! I know this is really getting ahead of myself, but I'm such a planner (which is killing me this cycle, not knowing what next year will look like) and have been thinking about this a lot.

Will it make me ineligible for in-state Texas tuition if I quit my job and travel for a couple of months before classes start? I would still have a texas address, but I file my taxes individually from my parents (they live oos) and so idk if I have to continue to be gainfully employed to still qualify for in-state tuition. Thanks!

If you currently live in Texas and TMDSAS classified you as a Texas resident for this application cycle, traveling for a month or two will have no effect. Leaving Texas for 12 months or more would likely cause you to lose Texas resident status.

What happens if I have two mandatory orientations scheduled for the same time, what should I do? I have typically scheduled interviews a week or more apart, which has worked for me, but Texas A&M sent an email saying orientation may be held a week before my interview, which would cause a conflict.

Which one scheduled you first? Ask the later one if you may attend an alternate information session

im kinda in the same boat as you. Had two interviews invitation on the same day then radio silence since. Now it has been like 2 weeks since news. I was complete end of july beginning of august.

I don't think so, they like to see their yearly GPA and MCAT averages look really high and to keep talent in Texas.
A school with a relatively lower MCAT average might not expect someone with a 99%tile MCAT to choose them, so in this situation it would be up to the applicant to be persuasive in "why this school, for me"

The unique process in Texas allows them not to worry about yield protection which primarily applies to most schools that have to wait until May 1st to figure who will actually confirm to attend.

In Texas 90% of the admits have to pick a school by January 31st. It means they admit who they want in round 1 and when a bunch drop, new people pick up a slot via match.

They were able to reschedule my interview without any trouble after I explained, so don't feel pressed to skip an info session or choose between interviews due to a scheduling conflict.
 
If a school accepts letters of intent, should I send one if I know I'd go there in a heartbeat before the upcoming prematch deadline?
 
I submitted my secondaries in June, July, and a very few in August, and haven’t heard back yet about II’s. I have a LizzyM of sixtynine, and wanted to ask if it’s too early for me to be tweaking out and if I still have a shot to receive an II from somewhere. Thanks!

Many are in the same place as you waiting for their first Texas interview, and you still have time to be offered one or more.
Do: update schools they accept updates if you have something major like a paper published
Don’t: call them and ask why you haven’t heard anything
Do: continue building your community service and medical experiences during this waiting period
 
@wysdoc Do you know when it’s a good time to send updates regarding new experiences and personal connections with my patients and their families? Working in a standalone ER has really given me more personal experiences than the hospital.

Unless there is something new you have added, not more details about existing work, I don’t think an update will be helpful. Still 3 more months of interview chances in Texas

Is it a good idea to send an update letter detailing my new clinical research experience? It was listed on my primary app but I hadn't begun the position when I submitted it and wasn't entirely sure what studies I would be coordinating. I now can talk in detail about which clinical trials I am coordinating - different devices and procedures in vascular surgery!
 
How do letters of intent work for TMDSAS, do the schools accept them? When should we send? Before the match? A month or two after the interview? Or after a waitlist?

yes, of course. Others are still waiting for their first one too, and about 75% of Texas applicants will get one or more interviews.

You can send one after your interview if you want to, but only send that "intent" letter to one school.
Texas residents will declare their intent officially by ranking their favorite school #1 for the TMDSAS Match.

Thank you. Finding out online that 50 percent of the interviews are done with people having submitted secondaries later in the cycle added to anxiety.

I panicked not getting a single II and gave an update on my single class grade from the summer, which was a prereq, and about the additional hours and events I did with my nonprofit. Idk if it seemed like a bad idea, but I kind of tried to mix in some intent with the update.

Bro I haven’t heard anything for a while too. BE HOPEFUL BROTHER; we will be doctors. For me this place has given me so much hope because I stress out so easily
