Hey everyone...

just thought it was about time to create this thread. I can't wait to meet all of you in the fall... anyways, I figure this will be a good place to talk about housing and all of that fun stuff.

Thanks for starting us an "Official" thread Dr. Dodger dog!!

Hey there,

I will be there next year. Procrastinating at work as usual. Actually been pretty busy in recent months, but still, I'm antsy... I don't like sitting at a desk all day. I know a few people going from my school... all very cool. Just a heads up about a book I read a few years ago (I posted this on recommended reading). It is called Death of the Good Doctor by Kate Scannell. Really great book about patients with advanced/end-stage HIV disease in the early 1990s. Here is the amazon.com link I enjoyed reading about her interactions with the various patients. Also another good book to read, although it is on the longer side (but fast paced) is the well-known And the Band Played On by Randy Shilts. It is different than the movie and a much better historical account of the events (although some of his facts are off... I work with a number of the people in the book). However, a great deal of it takes place at UCSF or SFGH as UCSF really was a lead in mounting a response to the disease (although UCSF administrators hands aren't totally clean on the subject). Makes me proud to join a community with such a strong tradition.

Hi everyone! Count me in on this thread!

Jtheater, I've been meaning to read And The Band Played On for ages, and just haven't gotten around to it yet. But I think that this will finally be the perfect summer to do so. I had no idea that UCSF/SFGH were mentioned - that's pretty amazing. Another good read is "My Own Country: A Doctor's Story" by Abraham Vergehese, also about the AIDS epidemic (albeit in Tennessee).

I like Dr. Dodger's idea of discussing housing here ... I know that I for one will definitely be looking for a roommate and it would be cool to room with another first year! I cannot wait to move back to the bay area 😀

Another question: Who is going to be in San Francisco/the greater bay area during the summer?

Remember that one of the people to discover the HIV virus was Jay Levy, on faculty at UCSF. UCSF was also the first med center (although they did it at SFGH) to set up a comrehensive AIDS service. SFGH had the famous and internationally recognized in patients AIDS unit; it was also the first. There were stories of patients at other hospitals, even across the country, literally given one-way bus tickets to SFGH because local hospitals didn't want to take them.

Who's 23 or younger and going to UCSF?

I wish I could join your little group but I'm still on the lowly high priority. 🙁 I'm trying to keep my head up and hope UCSF will give me a little love. 😍

Come on Antonio... you know you want to come to UCSF 🙂 Btw, since you asked, I am younger than 23.... 22 to be exact.

Hi everyone!

cbpremed: "lowly high priority" is an oxymoron; if you're in high priority, you have a good chance still!🙂 Best of luck!

I'm 21 and headed to UCSF this fall.
Are you concerned about the number of non-traditional students there, Antoniop? During the second-look weekend I met a handful of people who had taken time off to pursue consulting and research, but there certainly was no boundary drawn between "us" (ie. students straight of college) and "them."

(I think I might have met you Dr. Dodger Dog last weekend 😕 I know I met 2 of 3 USC BA/MD students there.)

Anyway, I'm super-psyched about meeting the rest of the class come fall. I'll be in the Bay Area this summer but, yeah, housing is still up in the air right now. I might have a potential roommate, but that's still not set or anything. PM me if anyone wants to coordinate or whatnot over the summer!

I already live in SF, so I will definitely be here over the summer. If anyone needs help with neighborhoods etc. for housing let me know.

antoniop-I am not under 23...actually I am not even close. But, if the average age of the class is ONLY 24-25, there must be several 22 year olds just to balance out my 35. 😀

cbpremed-the waitlist will start moving soon, so hold on!

Hi
I just wanted to know how the second look weekend went, I could not go because of I had midterms 🙁 but I know i'm definitely going to UCSF next year
Thanks

Hey, Hey, Hey...my future classmates and friends...

I just wanted to let Antonio know that I'm 23 and coming straight from undergrad. I must admit that I was a bit intimidated at first about attending a school with so many extraordinary non-traditional students. But frankly, where else will I get to learn alongside such richly diverse people? UCSF is tough to beat in that regard. Anyway, can't wait to meet you all. LAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE!

Hey everybuddy,

I've just recently discovered this website . . . I had been checking the accepted students page every now and then hoping to see some good dialogue - maybe we should move this discussion to the forum they have there . . . wouldn't have any pressure to be anonymous, right?

I too was a bit concerned (at first) about the older average age, as I'm 21 myself, but after meeting all you really cool people at the revisit - I wouldn't want it any other way! I just withdrew from all my other schools so I'll be at UCSF for sure . . . so excited! I can't wait to get to know all of you really, really well.

ps "jtheater" if "pekpek wara" means anything to you - let me know.

Let the party begin! Can I get a shout out from all my classmates who are going to be in SF this summer? I'm shipping my bike from Germany so depending when it arrives maybe we can organize a bike ride through Golden Gate Park.

i'll be up in san francisco next year...not sure when i will be arriving in the actual city though...right now the plan is late summer...possibly the day before orientation week...i am not much of a planner...i thrive on pressure...so hell why not procrastinate a little more

Hello classmates!

I'm also headed to UCSF this fall, and I am extremely excited about it! I'm trying to get into student housing before school starts in the fall. I put my application in, we'll see when my turn comes up.

Otherwise, I'm spending the summer here in Davis...I just graduated from UC Davis last week. Feels great. Really looking forward to meeting you guys!

Also, are you all planning on doing that orientation trip, which I believe is August 30/31st?

what...who...when...where...and how...what's this trip everyone keeps talking about...i havent heard and seen anything about it on the website or through stuff i have received...i wanna be included...someone let me know...thanks

Hello to the incoming MSIs! I am an MSII looking for someone to take the empty room in my flat, probably starting the lease in August. The rent is $695 plus utilities (which come out to around $50 depending on the power bill) and an $833 security deposit. The flat is on 10th Avenue between Judah and Irving, which is roughly a ten minute walk from campus, so it's very convenient. The room is without a closet, but the previous occupant left a handy clothes rack and it's spacious and gets a lot of light, and we have a back yard complete with gardening space if you're into that. If you're potentially interested, respond to this thread or e-mail us (it's me and a UCSF nursing student) at [email protected].

And by the way, congratulations to you all for getting in.

Dr. Frobert

Supreme Congratulations to everyone reading this thread.

A few of us first years are getting together this Monday for lunch. Come grab a bite if you're in town. We're eating at the Canvas Cafe on 9th and Judah -- at noon. No need to RSVP, but send me a PM if you want my cell number.

I'M WORKING ALL NEXT WEEK...BIG BUMMER. WHO IS GOING ON THE CAMPING TRIP?

Citygirl,

I'll be there. Are you bringing a tent? I only own a sleeping bag but I don't want to sleep under the stars. I can only "rough it" to a certain point.

To all my UCSF '07 classmates,

As far as hanging out, I'll be in SF on the 23rd and available to kick it from the 25th until the 30th. I am looking for others who are interested in exploring the surrounding areas on foot or by bike. If any of you are interested, let me know.

I ONLY HAVE A SINGLE PERSON TENT. I WAS GOING TO BRING IT ANYWAY, BUT I DON'T MIND SLEEPING OUT. IF THERE AREN'T ENOUGH TENTS TO GO AROUND, SOMEONE ELSE IS WELCOME TO USE IT.

I WON'T BE MOVING DOWN UNTIL THE 29TH. I WOULD LOVE TO DO SOME WALKING TRIPS AROUND THE CITY. THERE IS ALWAYS THE BEACH AND GOLDEN GATE PARK HAS SOME GREAT SPOTS. SOME OF GG PARK CLOSES TO JUST FOOT AND BIKE TRAFFIC ON SUNDAYS. WE WILL HAVE SUNDAY AND MONDAY AFTER CAMPING, SO IF ANYONE WANTS TO PLAN SOMETHING, I'M GAME. I KNOW.....THE ZOO!! WHO WANTS TO GO TO THE ZOO?!! IT'S RIGHT ON THE BEACH AND I HAVEN'T BEEN THERE IS YEARS.

Hi all, nice to meet you.
I was floating around on the allopathic forum - having fun debating the relative merits of ucsf vs Hopkins but it's nice to know that there's a friendly haven right here!
I'll be at Cafe Canvas, going camping too, and I really like the idea of the zoo - on Monday the 1st? unless we're all thorougly sick of each other by then....😉

OKAY, I CHECKED OUT THE ZOO INFO. IT WILL BE OPEN ON MONDAY 9/1 FROM 10 TO 5 AND ITS $10 ADMISSION.

I have a bike and I'm interested in cycling around the city. I need to put it back together and get some work done on it though -- I shipped it from Germany and it's in pieces. Anyone know any good bike places in the city that won't rip me off?

Correction -- Cafe Canvas is on 9th and Lincoln, opposite GG Park.

Monday, August 18, high noon.

See you there! 😎

The Canvas Cafe/Gallery
1200 9th Ave., at Lincoln (415) 504-0060

How many made it to lunch on Monday? I was sorry to miss it.

Twelve days and counting down

For all interested we're doing a repeat of last Monday's lunch in the inner sunset - at a Thai place between the Mucky Duck and the Arizmendi bakery on 9th above Judah at 12pm (sorry I can't remember the name...).
Love to see you there, it was nice meeting folk last week.
Maybe you can make it this time citygirl? Otherwise I still really like the idea of going to the zoo.

oh and seven of us UCSF class of 2007 members made it out last monday.

Sorry, still can't make it. I won't be officially moving down until Friday and I'm working up until Thursday, trying to earn every last dollar I can before entering living-on-loans-land. I'm up for the zoo, though.

Hi. We're organizing yet another lunch before all the fun begins. Tomorrow at noon, we're meeting at The Front Room on 9th and Judah. (And it really is on 9th and Judah this time).

1385 Ninth Ave (just south of Judah)

Sorry for the short notice, but we hope you can make it.
