Me too. Let me ask you this--I saw the match list, but was wondering how many Gophers do their elective rotations out of state. Any idea?

WOOHOO!! Finally a thread I can care about. I too will be attending the U of M next year. I just got accepted from the hold category (after interviewing in SEPTEMBER!), and am super pumped to be going there. Sooooo... all y'all folks from MN or what? I'm straight outta Rochester (wisconsin-madison undergrad). Where y'all coming from? GO GOPHERS!

Yo yo yo and all that. Barton, I grew up in Winona but have lived in L.A. since coming to USC for undergrad. Did you go to Lourdes? Mayo? We used to spank Lourdes in high school tennis, in fact my erstwhile doubles partner is also starting UofMN med school in the fall.

I will be the girl in the protective plastic bubble. I am a real pantywaist when it comes to cold weather.

i think i wanna do my residency in cali, and i saw that not many from MN go there.

do you think it's cause they wanna stay in minnesota? or do you think it's cause of the whole state residency deal?

I asked at my interview about the residency thing, and the students and admissions people all said that most people who go to U of M are from MN, and they want to stay in MN. They said that people who want to go east or west (particularly west) have a good track record. Most people just want to stay midwest. Regarding scholarships, I got a $1500 scholarship (need based) with my acceptance letter. I filled out the blanket scholarship form and haven't heard anything. I also just sent in this other scholarship app they sent me. I had to write a 1-page essay about professional values (which blew) but the scholarship is for $10,000 so I guess it's worth a shot.

I also got the $1500, plus a nonresident tuition waiver, which is like winning the flipping lottery to me.

Oldman, are you thinking of coming out to Cali after?

Wooooh.. I was getting a little scared.. I have been reading this site for 3-4 months and never see anything about the U.. except oldman is representing :) About scholarships... I am not really sure... I got a $1500 in my acceptance letter which I think everybody gets... the other scholarships will take awhile. The admin office is really slow about everything, but after that the school is great. My guess for out-of-state is about 40%, I think it is for a couple of reasons. The love/hate minnesota is one of them. People either hate it or love it. The U places around 45% and Mayo places around 15% which is impressive. Both very good residencies... It does place students in very good programs, such as Harvard but majority go to Mayo... I am not sure if it is choice or easier to get into.. I am guessing both. If you look at most schools, you will find this pattern. Where around 50% stay in the same city, cuz it is easier.

Congrats Barton :) I know people still waiting on the hold list. I got waitlisted last year and they don't say anything till May 15th... Once your in this school it is awesome.. the admin process is another story though... Rochester what year you graduate... my friend is from Rochester... John Marshall High School class of 97' she starts dental school with us...

Watto... I don't think you will have to worry about the cold.. you Moos Tower will be your home with classes starting at 9:00.. finishing at 5:30... then go to Anatomy lab the rest of the night... I heard stories about people going in on Sat nights last year... I guess with the 6 weeks.. we will live there... Did you guys notice they start school on Friday and we have our first test two weeks after... can't wait :) At least they give us two weekends.. how kind...

GO GOPHERS!!!!!!

was that 1500 automatic? i had that in my letter. when i saw the words "need based" i wasn't sure if that meant, i'd get it after...they checked my records.

that 10K scholarship, what was it called?

i wanna go to cali cause my gf wants to work there. i follow her around like a lost puppy

oldman I think you get it no matter what... if expense is a issue.. which is it is to all of us... Think about graduate research assistentships.. my grad was free and I am planning on doing it in med school... I won't bore you guys with the details if you know... but if you want more info... I can describe it... about out-of-state tuition that is a perk at the U... all students get that... they should mention that at the interview though or in applications more people would apply... but they probably want to reward the people that don't mind paying out of state tuition to come here....

What a dirty little secret that is--my friend applied as an out of stater and the financial aid office was very coy about the nonresident tuition issue. They wouldn't give her a straight answer until one day BAM, she got the letter that stated she'd pay resident tuition. Sneaky, sneaky.

Wow--our own thread!

Barton, you sure are excited! your excitement is infecting me!

About scholarships, I got a letter last Saturday awarding me $5000. It's a scholarship off that orange list, so they must be making decisions. By the way, the $5000 replaces the $1500 "automatic" scholarship that everyone gets with the admission letter, not added to it. Too bad, but I'm not complaining.

Oh and Barton, I'm still working on that "professional values" essay--mine blows too!!!!

Hmmm.. I better find that essay... although probably a long shot with only one lucky winner...

Oldman... the U and many other schools offer graduate research assistantships (RAs)... Basically you work 195 a semester and you get $3000 in tuition a semester, all student service fees and health insurance for free that comes to about lets say $900. Plus you get an hourly wage at about $13.13. So if you do the math you end up getting paid around $29 an hour to work. Have to do a min of 195 hours to get any benefit and can't work more. In grad school you can work 390 hr a semester, but med school limits it to 195 which is about 10 hours a week. You can really do anything where there is a posting or you can contact professors and see if they would be interested in giving you a RA. It can be research in a med lab, ta undergrad or grad class, community positions are also available. Go to www.umn.edu/ohr.. job center... and look under graduate assistantships to see some current positions. It comes down to working about 10 hours, some of them are really slacker positions That takes couple hours a week and you can log 10 :) This works for the community service projects. But it saves about $11,000 a year. Which isn't that bad :D

Just wanted to say hi. I'm still undecided as to whether I'll be at the U this fall, but if so, I look forward to meeting all of you! I stare at Moos Tower from I-94 on my way to and from work everyday, hoping to be inspired to make a decision one way or the other. :) :) :)

On the financial aid side of things, when I emailed the office to check on my app status, she said they were going to try and get things out in early May. Post if you get your package!

And blah to professional values!!!

Sadly, these are the primary issues I am dealing with regarding Minneapolis:

Is there a dirt path I can run on with no traffic lights?

How cheap is the beer? (Okay, I'm exaggerating a little on this one. Read: a LITTLE)

Where can I live so that I won't need to go outside to reach the med school? Are there skywalks to it or something?

What's the final word on the note-taking service?

Sorry, I am a bit of a slacker.

I just went to the U of MN med campus and found out I would not get my financial aid packet until end of june. Am I supposed to decide by May 15 which med school I should go to without knowing my loan/grant situation?? I think that is quite unfair.

ok, i got an email from BJ.

"Unfortunately, we have very little scholarship available. It
looks like a first year budget will be approximately $$29816 for 9
months. Of that $2000 will be grant, $8500 subsidized direct loan,
$3000 Subsidized University loan and the rest unsubsidized loan. Summer
funding will be a new $8500 subsidized direct loan and any remaining
need will be unsubsidized. More questions let me know."

How cheap is the beer? (Okay, I'm exaggerating a little on this one. Read: a LITTLE)

Not that cheap--$3-$4 a bottle depending on where you are and what you drink. Those are bar prices. A twelve at the candy store is 8-10 bucks.

No place like that, unless you plan on living in the anatomy lab. You won't have to go outside once you GET to school, though!

That's Stadium Village. Dinkytown is also within walking distance, but Stadium Village is that area...

If you're planning to move and don't mind living a little way from the med school, I'd recommend St. Paul. There are a lot more small buildings that tend to be nicer and more reasonable price-wise than Minneapolis.

I've done housing searches in the Twin Cities for two consecutive years now and have acquired a lot of knowledge that I'm totally willing to share! Post if you have more questions!

A dumpster? Oh wait...do you mean with your PARENTS?! You're such a pup!

But seriously, neighborhoods within walking distance to Moos include Stadium Village (closest), Dinkytown, and Prospect Park (can be pricey). Check out the class of 2006 message board. People with apartments to rent or looking for room-mates are posting now.

watto,

you are applying as an outta-stater right? knowing that there are few outta-staters at MN, why did you apply? i'm just curious.

I was never put on the waitlist or anything. I interviewed way back in September, so maybe that had something to do with it. I did call the admissions office just before I got my acceptance letter to inquire about hold status. Lola told me that everyone on hold should be notified during the week coming up to the 15th (this week!). MN will accept a few people right off the hold list to bring the class size up to 165. After that, a ranked waitlist is established (if you are waitlisted, you will know your rank) and people are pulled off it as people drop out of the class. People on hold can also be rejected. Good luck!

Oldman, I grew up in Winona, about 2 hours, 15 min. away. My dad still lives there, I'll get the chance to see him a lot more now.

Oldman, I am living at home to. Ten minutes away, sure beats the huge living expense on campus. Plus, we can alwayz crash at racergirl's place... right?? :) j/k

Jude, I got waitlisted last year... they give u a number. I got my letter around May 18th or something. So should find out next week or early the week after. Calling isn't going to help much but it doesn't hurt to try. The waitlist moved last year by 55 spots or soo, so if you are in the top 30 you are almost guaranteed a spot.. in previous years it makes high 30's or low 40's.

The med school frats are a pretty good deal if you are looking for a cheap place. They cost only about $225 and aren't bad, plus they are really close to campus which is really convenient.
