Just wondering where you all are planning on applying/attending?

Also -- what are some legitimate stats for Ohio schools?

Hey chem...

My top choice is UC...

Where in DC are you?

I am actually in Bethesda,MD.....how about you?

I plan to attend either OSU or CWRU.

Wow -- congrats!

So far I am applying to OSU, CWRU, MCO, Cincinnati, Wright State, NEOUCOM, and U Penn, U Pitt, Temple, U Mich, Mt Sinai, WVUSOM. I'll probably add a few more and/or remove a few depending on my MCAT score (this Friday! ).
Resident Alien is my hero

UC RULES!!! :D

Seriously, though, we're lucky to be in a state that has so many schools. You should definately apply to all of them (at least the public ones). You can probably find the stats you're looking for at AAMC's website.

Bearcats Kick A#$ !! I would agree with Amy on that one, but she has some likened herself to the worst team and city in baseball and football....Cleveland. You don't deserve to go to school here.

Go Ohio baby! :) I'm applying to OSU, UC, Case, MCO, Wright St., OU. will attend whoever takes me, highest preference listed first. :) man, what a great state to be from! good luck to all SDNer's!!

I'm applying to OU, Medical college of Ohio, CWRU, and that one DO school... but honestly, if I get in someone outside of Ohio... I'm outta here! I'm sick of Ohio... been here all my life.

For all of you that are applying to Wright State, what kind of MCAT and GPA do they usually look for in a applicant. I am applying right now, however, I am from KY.

Well, I think WSU does not put as much weight on GPA and MCAT as do the other schools. They are looking more at the entire person and their experiences. This reflects in their lower MCAT and GPA stats compared to the other Ohio schools. Just as a side note, Wright State only accepts about 8 people from out of state every year.

WSUreds, by any chance do you know out of state stats?

I do not know them off hand, but I have seen class lists, I just graduated undergrad from here by the way, but they publish that 90% of their class are Ohio residents. And the accept 90 students to every incoming class, so I would say between 9-12 students are from out of state every year.

Almost everyone I know that was accepted there this year, turned Wright State down to go to other schools. Almost all of them had excellent numbers. But I have talked to the admission directors and admin and they all stress they do not put as much weight into the numbers as do other schools.

•Why does everyone turn down WSU?•••••WSU is clearly an inferior school. They don't have their own campus, and share their facilites (including lecture halls) with undergrads. They don't even have their own hospital. The students there do seem very friendly, and anyone should be happy to get accepted to any school, but when given the choice, almost everyone chooses the schools with more resources, research money, etc. over WSU.

(WSUreds: don't knock my team or my city. I certainly DO deserve to be here at UC... I worked hard to get here, and to stay.)

Well, I am not in any way knocking the education at WSU because I have seen it first hand and the doctors that they produce are great. But the school has many downsides compared to the other Ohio schools.

1) It does not have a hospital.....it has a 7 hospital network where students rotate and have classes.
2) Small facilities on campus....Fred White and library.
3) Dayton is not anything to brag about.
4) Location of the school is suburban, but most of the hospitals are in or around downtown Dayton.
5) It is a new medical school created in the 70's.
6) Very little research money
7) Has a reputation of being very primary-care orientated and scares off people who want to specialize even though you can specialize very easily if you go here.
But, the reason Wright State SOM was created was to produce primary-care physicians for the Miami Valley and Ohio, so its education and clinical training are orientated in this direction.

Man I hope residency helps. Applying to:

1. Ohio State
2. U. of Cincinnati
3. MCO
4. NEOUCOM
5. CWRU
6. Wright State
7. Ohio University-COM

8. U PITT
9. Maybe a Mich. school or two

Chem- I'm working at the NIH till July in the medical neurology branch in bethesda. I'm sure I've bumped into you

Cincinnati is the best city in ohio... hands down.

Amy-
Can you give us all the low down about UC...resources, research opportunities, student body demographics, etc.

Thanks.

All I can say is "Who Dey Bengals!"

I'm applying to UC, OSU, CWRU. I agree with the pro-Cinti movement. I've lived all over as an adult - Houston, Washington, DC, New Orleans and now Phoenix. My 3 years in Cincinnati were hands down the best. More big city sports, art and culture, yet a small hometown feel like unother. So what if there's an occasional riot? It is the most underated city by far. And everyone I knew at UC med was extremely driven, yet extremely happy.

Going to see the Redlegs take on the Anaheim Angels this weekend! Go Griffey!

In my opinion (= grain of salt), i'd rank the ohio schools as:

If you care about the money-
OSU = Cincy > CWRU > MCO > WSU > NEOUCOM

If money isnt a big matter for you,
CWRU > OSU = Cincy > MCO > WSU > NEOUCOM

WSUreds, i havent received your pm

My only complaint about Cinci is that it's VERY conservative. Otherwise, it's not a bad place to live. As for the school, the students are very friendly, which is important... you don't want to be stuck somewhere that you hate. Most people here are Ohioans (as you'd probably guess), but we have a good number of people from other places. There's lots of research money here, and not too hard to get involved in research if you're interested. All in all, I can say I'm happy here. Good luck to everyone applying this year!

It's not very diverse either... that's my one problem.

C_redleg...i think cinci would be your kinda place
haha :D

I'm really glad to see people like Cinci so much! I can hardly wait to move and I'm looking forward to meeting you guys that are gonna be there!

that's where i call home... so i guess it is my kinda place

Resident Alien,

Very sweet compliment. You are the nicest and most mature 20 year old I know. (If only my (baby) 21 year old brother had his act together 1/10 of the amount you do....)I still have my fingers crossed you will pick OSU but I will understand if you pick CWRU. :)

Bearcats rock! But...I have to say, the bengals and the reds both SUCK. How they could be superior to the Browns and the Indians, I don't know, you'd have to be 1) very faithful 2) PLAIN BLIND. I'm not applying to any OH schools (applying internationally) but since I did undergrad at CWRU, I guess I'd have to say CWRU would be my first choice, albeit their cost. But the opportunities here would be just too good to pass up...the new link with Cleveland Clinic being a major attractant. However, if I were to stay in the US, I'd just really want to get out of OH.

UC's cool, but way too close to home. And I've seen first-hand how political things can be at UC. Plus, I live/grew up in one of the most conservative parts of the city. Being there would just be like high school again.

But wow, SDN has a strong OH "chapter." GO BUCKS!

I would beg to differ... the reds are the best franchise in mlb...
The indians cannot even compare... I mean what the heck is chief wahoo? He looks like a skinned monkey.
I see a big shift in ohio... all those fair weather indians fans are going to start becoming reds fans.

By the way, where internationally would you want to go leorl?

Doesn't the Bearcats basketball team have the most 6th year seniors on it? :D

Anyone know any more good strategies to get off the OSU waitlist? So far I have sent a letter of intent, updated transcripts, and some other updates to my application. It's getting late and I think my chances are dwindling fast.

You can come and talk to me about the Indians and Browns even in the same breath as Cincy teams when 1) Indians actually win a World Series!!! and 2) Browns actually go to a freiking Super Bowl.

The Reds are in first place and are going to be good for awhile and the Bengals are gonna make the playoffs next year "WHO DEY, BABY!!"

Good luck!

c-redleg: how bout them reds!?!? :D :D :D

Yes, I'm going home to see them play this Thurs against the cards.

Does anyone know if Case accepts mostly from in-state as well? I hear they get money from the state and do have preference for ohioans...

Resident Alien: did you interview everywhere in Ohio? Do you know of anyone with "lower" stats that interviewed at any OH med schools?

>27 MCAT
>3.7 GPA

Yeah--let's try that...

First of all, I know many people that have achieved acceptance with below a 3.7, if you look at the stats for almost every Ohio school, their average GPA is below a 3.7. Therefore, it would be my assumption that if you have around a 3.5, you should not worry about your GPA. On the other hand, I do not know anyone with below a 27, that has gotten accepted, but I know a few with 24's, 25's, and 26's that have gotten interviews, but have been rejected post-interview. They received interviews at Wright State and I know there are quite a few people at WSU with below a 27 by just observing the stats and heresay from some of my friends. Just realize, that the number of people I know is limited and that there will always be people who are outliers and get accepted with low numbers, but that is not the norm. Hope this helps.

My GPA was below 3.5, and my MCAT was on the low side. I am currently a student at UCCOM (first time applicant). Anything's possible! :D

Thanks for the feedback!
