I was accepted to OHSU and am on hold at Vandy and UCSD. I really liked portland and the curriculum there, just wanted to get some opinions in case a miracle happens and I get into ucsd or vandy.

Well...UCSD has better weather, is better ranked, is probably closer to home, and is a whole lot cheaper. I tend to think those top curriculum.

Doc13, you should look at this site:

I forgot to mention that my primary interests are in primary care. I want to go to a school where I will be happy at. $$$ is a factor, but not the most important one for me.

if you've never been out of california, and $$$ isn't a big factor, I'd say - go for a change! I've heard great things about the quality of life in Oregon and OSHU in particular (you'd know better than I... I didn't interview there). Good luck and congrats!

How did you get in OHSU as a CA resident? Congrats.

They take out of state students. They give preference to people from oregon prior to interview, but after the interview they take who they feel is best qualified. They put alot of weight on the interview and luckily my interviews went really well.

I vote for OHSU! When did you interview and when did you hear? I'm still waiting to hear from them after a March interview. I absolutely loved the school and will consider going there over Columbia if I get in!! Portland is an absolutely wonderful city to live in (I know because I have relatives there and visit frequently). I would say OHSU trumps UCSD as a school to be happy at. Don't know much about Vandy. Good luck with the decision.

I interviewed on the last day of February. Got the acceptance letter at the end of april. Don't worry, THEY ARE RUNNING BEHIND. Many of the people that have been accepted (including myself) Have not recieved the acceptance packet from the school, only a one paragraph letter. Therefore, many of the people who have been accepted have not even had the chance to reject the acceptance offer. I'm 99.9% sure I'll accept, but spots should open up IF you have been placed on hold. I would not be surprised if you get an acceptance letter within a week or two--Being that you are a strong enough applicant to get an interview at Cornell. Good Luck!

here's my 2 cents. i live in nashville and work with vandy medical school a lot through my job as an hiv educator. nashville: leaves a lot to be desired, especially when you are comparing it to san diego and portland, both of which are great. nashville is southern (read racist and segregated). if you have never experienced this first hand, be ready for a shock. i'm from the midwest, an area not known for it's progressive climate, but i was bowled over when i first came. as for vandy, it has a good reputation, but my first hand experience is that patients aren't well cared for... go for portland. EVERYBODY recycles there.

Acutally OHSU is pretty open to out of state people. Somewhere between 20-30% of the class is out of state as I recall.

Sorry SMW, I meant Columbia, not Cornell. Any ways I think you get my point

Come to UCSD and be my classmate! :D

Okay, so hanging with matt isn't enuf eh? Okay, well:

--San Diego in my opinion is the best place to live in the U.S..
--It's ranked #20 by usnews, well reputed
--It's really cheap
--The people are very nice
--Did I mention the weather is wonderful?
--They've really cut down on class hours so it's no longer as hardcore as it was
--Did I mention the beach is 5 minutes away?
--Every1 I've met on SDN that is going to UCSD is super
--The residency matchlist is very nice, especially if you want to match in California afterwards
--And most importantly, if you have family in CA (mine are 80minutes north), they'll be real close

OHSU has my vote too! Congratulations! I am on the "hold" list and waiting rather anxiously for a final decision and/or a letter stating my position on the ranked wait list. I share your view regarding the cost of attending medical school and am also a CA resident. I could not possibly imagine anyone not being happy at OHSU and Portland. The school is beautiful and the city is hard to beat! As you want to go into primary care, OHSU ranks 2nd in primary care (correct me if I am wrong).

I agree. When it's all said and done, whats an extra $60,000. It seems like alot now, but once we are doctors, it will only be another bill to pay at the end of the month. I loved OHSU and am looking forward to attending, good luck to all of you on hold! The list should be moving soon!

OHSU

Okay, there may be a precious few areas where OHSU is better than UCSD...but beauty is definitely not one of them. And look, I didn't even bring in the ocean, which many campus buildings have a view of.

photo contest going on here?

Isn't that cute! Matt, None, & Hero, thanks for the pretty pics!

I appreciate all the pics, but I've been there. I know what the school looks like, I just wanted to get some info on the type of education, curriculum and happiness of students. To be honest, I wouldn't base any med school decisions on weather. You're going to be inside studying most the time!

Or you could study outside, weather permitting

I picked OHSU over UCSD, UCD, and am about to give back a top half waitlist at UCSF. For me it was all about cost of living and the ability to afford to buy a house while in school (not to mention that the OHSU curriculum is AWESOME, and proven for the last 9 years). I have actually deferred for a year due to a military committment. Which brings me to the fact that I did buy a house (closes in mid June), and would like to rent it out until August 2003 when I will return to attend school. If anyone is interested in housing, it is 4 miles from school, on a bus line, and will rent to a fellow med student far below what I will charge an average joe off the street. Anyway, good luck to all trying to make the decision on a school or waiting not so patiently to hear.

Cheers, strider

Strider--I sent you a PM about your house in Portland!

Stryder, I also sent you a PM about your house in portland

I have lived in the P-town area for >6 years, and I know a couple of people who go to OHSU. The weather sucks here and there are an awful lot of filthy hippies, but if you can stomach those things the city does have a lot to offer, especially if you are an outdoorsy type (the mountains and ocean are both within less than 2 hours). It's clean, crime and cost of living are both relatively low, it's not too crowded, and people here are fairly liberal and open-minded on the whole (unlike in most of OR). The people I know at the med school seem very happy. I know one girl who picked OHSU over Einstein and Tufts, and doesn't regret her decision at all. If you know you want to go into primary care, I have heard there are good clerkship opportunities, especially if you are interested in rural medicine. Anyway, good luck with decision!
