These combined residencies are getting ridiculous
huh?

....

As for the OP's question, from my friends who went thru TYs, it's pretty variable. Some programs have reputations for being insanely easy (St. Mary's Chicago) or having really really good benefits (Reading, PA) which means they attract really top tier applicants, to the point that the individual programs are as competitive as the specialty PG2 programs themselves. Apply broadly to TY's, because it's safer than having to find an IM prelim at the last minute.

If you want to have a rough intern year, do it in NYC.

The most sought after prelim years are usually the easiest ones and often the ones that are community programs rather than academic ones.
