Hi...I am a Licensed Practical Nurse in the Military. I am 29 and I have been taking continuing my education at the University of Maryland throughout my career. I will leave the Military for college (full time). I was wondering what my chances were to get into a D.O. program once I finish my BS in Psychology. I will be leaving the military in September and my overall GPA is 3.75. Thanks..

Chances are good. I'm 28 and starting now in a DO school. I know quite a few older students.

Not a problem- I started at 31, and I'm only 6th oldest in the class! I think other schools are about the same.

  7. Started at 28. Be an MS2 next year at DMU. May actually be to your benefit at some schools to be older!

Age really shouldn't be a problem. I started at AZCOM when I was 38 and there are a few people in class who are a little older that I am. I think the average starting age for my class was around 27 or so.

For me the hard part has been meeting people my own age, but that shouldn't be an issue for you. I just keep telling myself that I'm not getting older, I'm getting bitter!

    Joe,
I am heading to AZCOM next month. Looks like we are in the same age bracket. Any advice, or words of wisdom you'd like to share?

Since I really don't know anything about your background or expectations I'm not really sure what to say. You probably already know to wait a while before buying any texts because you'll generally get most of what you need from class. Definately get Netter for anatomy, and buy whatever histo atlas the instructor is using (I'll sell you my old one if you want). Other than that, here's some general advice that I've found helpful where ever I go:

    1. Never play pool with someone named after a city.
    2. Never eat at a place called "Mom's."
    3. Always go to the bathroom whenever you get the chance.
    4. Never eat anything bigger than your head.

    And most importantly....

    5. Never sleep with anyone who has more problems than you do.

You can e-mail me at [email protected]

28 and starting this fall (UMMS Worcester MA)...tho I have to say that at my school at least the avg age seems to be around 23/24...wonder if this is an allopathic/osteopathic phenomenon. My take on the avg entering age is based only on the roomate list given at orientation and that could very well be skewed due to the simple fact that older students may be less likely to want a roomate...but encouraging hearing others in the same bracket...best of luck to all!!!
