I thought it was a rumor--that several have met olympic gold medalists at thier interviews. There was one at my interview a week ago. Have you guys met any other outstanding applicants?

i haven't met any (to my knowledge, anyway), but i remember that debi thomas, an olympic ice skater from the late 80s or so, went on to medical school a few years later (i want to say she went to northwestern). and a swimmer from the last summer olympics had deferred med school for a year to compete (i can't think of the name, but it was one of the more famous swimmers and i think she was holding a spot at columbia). that's pretty cool.

Unfortunately, I've met no gold medalistists--just silver and bronze, to my dismay.

Lately I've been having thoughts about starting my speedskating career and to try and make the national team. Anyone else been bit by the Olympic bug?

I read about a doctor at Tufts (a long time ago) who tried to do this. He was really into luging and tried to make it to the Olympics. He even qualified to participate in the Olympic qualification runs. He didn't make it, however, but the story ended with him going there as a physician to treat athletes this year in Salt Lake. I thought that was really nice.

I work with an ER doc who has won olymic gold/silver/bronze in swimming, so they are out there....

Debbie Thomas went on to Stanford Med. Cristina Teuscher, is the swimmer. She is at Columbia I believe.

The swimmer is Jennie Thompson. She is at Columbia now. She is supposedly the most decorated olympic swimmer ever (or something like that.) Real big shot.

there's a certain sociopathic j***off that posts here by the name of olympicgold. if his name has any truth to it then we have a good example right here under our noses. no offense OG

Eric Heiden (won 5 gold medals speedskating in 1980) is now a doctor. Pretty cool.

i think debi thomas did her undergrad at stanford--i'm pretty sure she went to northwestern for med school and went into orthopedics.

I thought she did her Undergrad at UCLA and went to Stanford for med school. But I do know Cristina Teuscher went to Columbia for undergrad and I'm almost positive she's going to med school there too.

although maybe not premed, the girl from Blossom is a neuroscience major, and I think she went to Stanford undergrad, but I may be wrong.

Sorry, just wanted to contribute, I don't know any famous olympians

[QB]••••yeah, i heard she was in a neuroscience PhD program at UCLA. i also remember hearing that winnie from the wonder years was a math major at UCLA (and stayed on for grad school, i think) and had this website up with math problems for kids, or something like that. it's weird to think that these 'lofty' people go to the same schools as the rest of us....

sorry, that got off-topic from the olympics...

I'm thinking that Teenie Albright (figure skater from the 50's or 60's), or somebody from her generation, is a doctor.

Another off the topic cool fact:

Debra Messing from Will & Grace went to my undergrad (Brandeis University) and her old dorm room was my boyfriend's room in sophomore year....oh the memories I had in that room.....

yeah, well my ex-girlfriend's room when we were going out used to be lauren hill's room.

🙁•••••Mayim Bialik went to UCLA for undergrad. I think that another poster already mentioned her being there for her PhD as well.

Christina Teuscher DID go to columbia for undergrad, she was a friend of a friend, but she is NOT at P&S right now. i am quite sure she is not in medicine at all.

i told you guys....

Thanks for putting me straight. She was a friend of a high school friend. I thought she started out pre-med and heard later she went to Columbia for grad school. Stupid me assumed it was med school!

I met a Canadian olympic gold medalist rower studying medicine in Ireland. Also a worlds gold medalist rowers there too. Amazing people. The Canadian put his athletic career on hold for a while. The worlds champion somehow manages to fit in all that training with the studying. Man!

Dot Richardson (softball pitcher) is an ortho. i want to say that she took a hiatus from her residency to compete in the olympics. and, yes, it was jenny thompson (multi-olympic swimmer) who entered columbia after the sydney games (which should make her an M2 right now).

also, I heard Amy Chow (gymnast), gold medalist, was applying to med school this year. Someone saw her at Standford interview...

Debbie Thomas is in her residency now at King-Drew hospital in LA

Rachel (Buehler) Van Hollebeke - U.S. Women's Soccer gold medalist - just retired and entered med school at UC San Diego. She did her undergrad at Stanford, took her exams in 2008 and was accepted to UCSD in 2011 but kept deferring.

Sorry just have to correct, she's the most decorated female olympic swimmer ever. Michael Phelps is the most decorated overall.
I don't know any olympic athlete doctors, but my childhood best friends' parents were both silver and bronze medalist olympic rowers. They were stockbrokers tho (or at least the dad was).

they must definitely have a good story behind them

In 2002 Michael Phelps wasn't winning anything...

Why the hell doesnt she just go work at a hospital? Or get involved with a med school? Like unless you're a drug addict, an orthopedic surgeon should never be "out of work".

I guarantee you if she emailed Northstate and asked for a teaching position theyd hire her in a heartbeat. I bet a Carrib School would pay her 6 figures to teach anything regardless of her credentials lol

I dont understand....why...she cant pay for her bills...
Basically...because she wants to be a television star, and not a doctor ??..
Okay private practice bailed on ya. Get to work somewhere else.

The real world is not that simple. I don't think you guys understand how physicians get paid or how their jobs work because your statements don't make any sense. Are there good job markets for orthopedic surgeons, yes, of course. I'm not sure why you think that academic groups are going to be interested in someone with zero academic inclination and her resume.

Why should an orthopedic surgeon "never be out of work"? Is there something magical about surgery that makes it different than any other specialty or job for that matter?

Outside of this, this is someone that 'lost custody' of their child 5 years ago. Do you have any idea how hard that is to do, especially as a woman? Drug/alcohol, major criminal problems, major psychiatric issues, etc. There is certainly more to this story than what is in this single article.

"Thomas said two divorces and clashes with colleagues that caused her to be let go from two jobs led to the problems she has now"

If you knew you were in a bad position, I am just saying, I would avoid this clashing.
Also there is nothing on her drug problems.

So you are telling me, if she needs money so bad, she couldn't even do anything with MD behind her name and a highly specialized skill set ?
She couldn't assist on surgeries. She couldn't hang even a drip for 20$/hr.

did you watch her gofundme video ? Because she literally said that doing a couple surgeries acquitted to a single speaking engagement. But she cant do these cause she is out of the lime-light. Quit chasing easy money. To me she sounds a little delusional about her situation. work is work.

I think Debi needs to do what all physicians who have trouble finding work locally do. Move to another state dont u think?

SDN has a former Major League Baseball player currently studying at an Ivy League med school, amongst others.

I was more saying that since she's an MD and somewhat famous I could see there being unscrupulous schools who would employ her just to say "we have the first black female Olympic medal winner on our faculty". As for orthopedic surgeons being unable to find work, I was more saying that as a licensed MD she Should be able to find some kind of employment. (Given that she doesn't have a substance abuse or psych condition, in which case she should no longer be a licensed physician anyway)

How do you know she doesn't have a substance abuse or psych history? Again, there is a lack of information in these stories, except that she has lost custody of a child, which is very difficult to do without pretty extreme circumstances. She is not a licensed MD currently. As a surgeon, you can't just "go assist" or "hang a drip". That isn't how it works. There are hoops to jump through and then the issue of finding someone to hire you, which is difficult if you aren't licensed and have had enough outside the hospital problems to have these things happen.

Oh I didn't realize she'd lost her license, if that is the case then you're right she certainly can't just "go find work". Only reason I say she doesn't have a psych issue or abuse problem is because there's no mention of it anywhere in the article.

I wonder if ADCOMS were aware that the US Women's Soccer team is basically an entire locker room full of TOs and Dez Bryants.

Her Virginia medical license is expired.

I'd venture that most people don't let their medical license expire in the state they are currently residing and presumably wish to practice. There is a pending board order as well, which has not been uploaded to her page; something's up (in addition to the loss of child custody, "personality clashes", etc.).
