I HATE ESSAY QUESTIONS IN SCIENCE COURSES! Goddammit. Key-word basis grading is the WORST idea ever. Might as well just say, "list what you know on subject X." I spent an hour arguing with my TA where she accused me of grubbing for points, and that she couldn't give me any because regardless of whether or not the answer she was looking for was inferred my responses.. since they were not explicitly written out, they therefore weren't there and I had to lose the points. Nevermind I had pretty graph and diagrams.

But seriously.. I had all but bloody re-defined each last sentence.. but since I didn't explicitly (key word there) them.. I got dinged. Whatever happened to "I want to test your comprehension and knowledge of the material" theory. <SIGH>

Don't worry little gunner, it'll all be better.

The TA's hands are tied, because as soon as one trigger happy premed complains to improve their grade, it opens up a whole torrent of students trying to argue their way to a higher grade.

Seriously though, as a TA, the most annoying thing is having students argue with you when you are provided with a precise rubric for scoring. The reason the rubric exists, for the key word section, is to standardize grading so the hot chick doesnt get all the free points. You lose either way-- if you have a rubric people will want you to interpret it creativitely, and if you have loose grading, all the hotties and suckups will get the points.

Oh yeah, the thing is, in science classes, they ARE just checking to see if you know the terms. The only reason for essays is to see if you know how the terms apply to each other conceptually. It sucks, but the TA really cant do much to help you out, if TAs are trained anything like they are here.

so how many points were you arguing for?

i never had the balls to do that. i only had 1 exam re-graded ever, and that was because he used the wrong answer key and gave me a 38 instead of a 98. lol.

I was actually arguing for a lot.. because I thought my definitions were inclusive for the answers they sought. I guess I thought wrong.

Thanks for clearing that up Gleevec, makes sense. I wasn't trigger happy, I was mad. LOL.

i was 2 points out of a thousand of getting an A in one class. i didn't complain.
