Guys, this is straight from the Examkrackers' website. This kid apparently took the test at McGill in Canada and the test site had forms EK and BK. Read on for the horror and check the site out for more details

"The fire alarm went off 3 times: twice during PS, once during VR... Each time, we went outside and compared answers using our books. The proctors knew it happened, do you think our results will get cancelled? "

Using your books will not raise your score that much. Unless you are in the 4-5 range and have no grasp of the topics. Then maybe you could bump it up to a 7.

I think their scores will get thrown out. Theres no other fair way to go about it. I feel sorry for the people who didn't cheat though.

Eh dont worry. I bet everyone that cheated were pretty dumb to begin with. I've seen this a lot at my school. Usually what happens is that all the dumb people try to form a group and cheat through the test. All they end up doing is failing anyways because a group of dumb people just results in one big idiot taking an exam.

I suppose using the books wouldn't help all that much, but comparing answers between students would. Out of a large group many people are going to have the same passages, and I could easily imagine a scenario in which a number of answers are corrected based on group discussions about individual passages and questions.

I have no idea what will end up happening, but I don't think the scores should be thrown out. The MCAT is only offered twice a year, and for many students at that test site throwing out the scores would mean delaying their application one whole year because you can't apply without an mcat score. That's a HUGE penalty for something that they had no control over. Not to mention that some have already spent $300-$1200 dollars on the amcas application that would now be totally wasted with no mcat score to report. They shouldn't throw out the scores.

what kind of punishment do think you would get if you got caught cheating? besides haveing your test scores cancelled

Anal Rapage is the most common form of punishment they use, its in MCAT Essentials, read up on it

Hey all,

I for one am not impressed with this administration of the MCAT.

1. what are they going to do about the group of people who had to take the exam at McGill? Nothing. The aamc people know that there are horror stories like this all of the time. they know that this will eventually fade with time, and no one will care this time next year.

2. what are they going to do about people who had their test cancelled at testing centres where there was no power and/or the testing centre was closed? Nothing. I don't even see them normalizing the score amongst the people at the centre whenever they DO write (be it one week, one month, or 6 weeks from now) rather than all the people with the form.

-honestly: I have no idea how their normalizing/percentile system works. Is it between test centres? or within test centres?

Either way I don't think it's going to take into account the fact that some people wrote it at least a week before other people.

I am particularly livid about this. I would be bitter even if I didn't think that I got completely screwed. How can you account for someone getting more time to study for this test.

How many people would do better on this test given one more week of time to study AFTER the point where they had originally alotted. I know I would. I know all my friends who didn't have to write the test the same day as me are now studying their asses off, thanking their lucky stars, and laughing at my particular lot in fate (not necessarily in that order😛 )

Yes I am bitching. But I think I am bitching with a valid argument.

Bollocks to the power outage. Bollocks to the AAMC (buncha bloody masochistic wankers), and Bollocks to the people at McGill who cheated!!!.

Cheers to all the rest,

Sincerely yours,

Silenthunder.

Punishment?
Try explaining to a medical school how cheating disqualified your test score. I don't think they will be very sympathetic.
Go get your MBA.

further proof: they also used this in verbal

In the end AAMC would have a hard time prooving anything. They wouldn't be able to proove it unless the proctors took notes on who was cheating and who was not. But even then it's a tough call.

once again this doesnt affect any of you you have to beat the aamc standardized curve not your peers.

I am not surpised at all by this story. No matter how much AAMC propagandizes that MCAT conditions are standardized for ALL test centers, its just not true. For the April MCAT, most of Nor. Cal people were told ON THE DAY OF THE TEST that no timers would be allowed. While moderators in So. Cal., some parts of East Coast, and moderators for Sunday MCATs allowed timers. So, you can see how that screwed the curve. I believe I could have gotten atleast 1 or 2 points higher had everyone been required to take the exam without timers...because without them a person can really screw up on the verbal. I ended up with a 10 on vebal...not the best score...

That's just the way life works.

No one knows how AAMC standardizes the exam perhaps they reuse some of the experimental questions in other administrations and have a scale due to those. This is mere speculation though and is pointless. Just know timer or no timer sunday or saturday on the moon with the frikin NFR or on a mountain with a candy bar your score is not judged against anyone but the aamc scale. complaining about other factors is ridiculous it has no effect whatsoever on your score remember standardized not curved!

sgilani or for that matter anyone,
please don't be sad about the whole mcat situation. i'll tell you about my story about the april mcat. 1st the physical science section kicked my butt...left and right. i was basically dizzy by the end of ps..I randomly answered questions to 1 WHOLE passage. my dad's an electrical engineer and i've practically grown up with math and physics...so it would be an understatement to say that i was disappointed on the day of the test. well, then came the verbal. with no timer and the clock on the wall BEHIND me, i knew i was spending WAY TOO MUCH time on some passages. and believe me the verbal for april was really tough as well. that's just the way it is always. anyhow, during lunch while my friends were boasting about how they had HANDLED the test so far i was about have a nervous breakdown...and sulking in my corner. then COINCEDENTALLY my father drops by and asks me how the ps was...lets just say it wasn't a pretty site with all these pre-meds around. i wanted to leave the test immediately...i wanted to cancel my scores. i don't know how i went back into that testing room and just found some strange inspiration from the boasting of my friends to put every single joule of my energy into the bio section.

Well, when the results came back, all those guys who had been so arrogant on the day of the test, were planning on re-taking the exam in August. I didn't do exceptionally well, but with a 33 and my lowest scores on verbal being a 10, I am satisfied.
what happened to me when checking my scores is a story of its own for another day.
so, the moral of the story: DON'T WORRY YOU WILL BE FINE🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
