How many hours after classes is everyone spending per week on OMM?
Thanks.

Outside of class, I spent maybe 60-90 minutes on studying/practicing OMM per semester. Basically, I'd do review before exams.

That said, I regularly used/use OMM on classmates & family, so it wasn't like I was cramming for the exams.

If you study OMM along with your anatomy then it can enhance the education of both.

Personally studying OMM with Netter and my anatomy notes made it easier to understand both concepts.

Like DrMom I practiced on friends/family and used study breaks to treat my classmates.

Both my OMM and Anatomy grades thanked me.

Thanks for the replies.
The reason I ask this question is that since MD and DO curricula (sp?) are pretty much the same during the first 2 years, I'm assuming due to the OMM courses, DO students would be more pressed for time than say the MD students. I just wanted to see what the DO students' opinions were. So far, it seems that people aren't spending a whole lot of time on them.

At PCOM we spent between 3-6 additional hours per week in class and lab than the MD schools in Philadelphia. As said above, if you practice OMM on your friends then you really dont have to study or cram for a practical.

Its like suturing and knot tying in surgery. If you practice it just a few minutes a day you dont need to sit down and really go through the motions the night before the OR...its already in your head and in your hands.

I don't know... I spend a whole lotta time on OMM. It maybe because I am not all that kinesthetic, but even the written stuff seems to take a lot of time/NRG. Near the last semester of this year I found it easier if I took notes on our OMM packets as we actually did the manual part during class (ie - draw in forces or whatever little tid bits the OMM docs like to throw out).

I normally study 2 solid days before a manual practical and a week before the written. Before that I am reading intermittenly or practicing lightly throughout the week. Correlating OMM with anatomy is very helpful too! And keep up with your readings! I know plenty of people that study much, much less, but have no problems so it is your call on how comfortable you are with the material.

For the written exams, I would start studying around two weeks ahead. I would simply read over the powerpoint for 5-10 each day until the exam. For the manual exams, I would run through the techniques in my head once every couple of days, then run through them on a fellow classmate a few days before the real thing. But like JP said, you remember very easily the techniques that you use the most. Since I've been home for summer, I've been treating a friend suffering with migraines with cranial, and I'm surprised at how easy the techniques are coming to me now.

In first year, I'd usually wait until 3 to 4 days before the exam and
then that's all I'd do is study the PPTs, doing the reading ONLY if
something wasn't clear from the PPTs. And then as many practice
Q's as I could.

Physical technique wise - I'd practice on my wife and then a
classmate about 2 times each. I wouldn't waste my time
with diagnosis and all of that - I'd just take the technique
list, after having gone through kimberly and written out
the techniques and then put a few keywords on the technique
list, and run through the setups quickly. While waiting to be called
into the practical, I'd look at a technique name and then mentally
set it up.

This year I plan on doing some OMM studying every night and maintaining
less of a cramming style of studying.....:D

I see. So, it appears that DO students have a lot more to do in terms of the amount of studying they must do compared to the MD students. 3-6 additional hours a week in OMM classes plus the extra time outside of classes......that's a lot. MD students have it easier I guess.

None whatsoever. We were given reviews in class before an exam so there was no need to do anything outside of class.

Some of the people who want to do OMM for a living did it all the time, though.
