This is based on info and hearsay I have collected over several years about particular school sensitivities in Texas:

Texas A&M: Strongly gpa oriented, they highly value the 3.9 and 4.0 gpa students.

UT-San Antonio: Definitely an EC school. This school is very interested in students who have a large list of meaningful EC's for that well rounded, interesting person. Almost seems like MCAT and gpa take a back seat to this here.

UTMB: It appears applying early is more important for this school than the others.

UTSW: While gpa is important, it seems like MCAT is king at this school.

UTH: Its hard to say here, decisions seem more random than elsewhere.

Texas Tech: This school places more weight than the others on your potential for becoming a rural, underserved, primary car physician.

TCOM: How well you write your secondary essays on osteopathy, showing that you truly understand the philosophy and are in accord with it.

Feel free to correct or add to this.

UTMB wants to fill its entire class with pre-match offers. Being early is a necessary to have a reasonable shot.

Hey, thanks, this is helpful.

the TX med schools all try to fill most of their class with prematch offers. applying as early as possible is vital to getting in unless you have stellar numbers.

this past year, numbers all over TX are way up from previous years so it's becoming increasingly competitive.

also i found out today, TCOM had the highest avg scores on the COMLEX in the US and has a 93-94% USMLE pass rate. w00t!

What are "stellar" numbers in Texas?

3.8+ GPA and 30-31+ MCAT. these are far from proven rules. it's just a general principle that people with awesome numbers are the pick of the lot. apply early and the schools are more liberal with what they'll interview.

Seriously? Then maybe I should just sit back and relax if it's that easy...

But, then again, I'd rather not have an ego...
