First MD Awarded to a woman

On this day in 1849, Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman to earn an MD degree when she graduated from New York's Geneva College. Before Geneva accepted her into its medical program, Blackwell had received rejection letters from 29 medical schools. After spending many years building a successful practice in spite of her many skeptics, she devoted her life to helping women gain respect in the medical field.

Compliments of the History Channel's page-a-day calendar.

I also read she graduated at the top of her class in my ****-a-day desk calendar.
