Will schools accept online classes to help boost my science gpa? There were a few science classes that seemed interesting (pharmacology, immunology) but are online...

I know that taking online courses for the core classes are not recommended... but if I just want to boost my science gpa.. will this work?

^^ obviously hah

You can do it if you want, but when adcoms see that you took a whole bunch of "easy" classes all of a sudden then your GPA boosts then you stop then yea they get the idea.

Up to you, if anything i don't thiink it will hurt, it's your choice and your paying for the courses so if you need too, go for it

Sure you could do that, but adcoms are going to see what classes you took and where you took them. I have a sneaking suspicion that these online classes aren't likely going to be considered "academically rigorous."

I agree with this statement.

I have heard (Through the grapevine) online classes are not worth the same as "real" classes

If you take them through an accredited university than usually they show up as a regular class on your transcript and you cannot tell the difference. But it varies from university to university

^This.

I have a bunch of online classes I took in my postbacc that you can't tell, expect for the last photography class but that's only because I moved 2000miles away for a research position partway through the semester and there's no physical way I could have attended it.

I was looking at taking some more classes in my new town but it looks like the local university puts a -w at the end of course numbers for distance learning classes🙁

So check your school.

This. Online courses through your university...not U of Phoenix.

I take online classes through St. Cloud State University, and U of MN, neither of them show a difference in course number on the transcript. Additionally, if you are interested, SCSU offers online courses at in-state tuition prices, it doesn't go up for being a non-resident, and they are an accredited school... The description from Cole about courses not being rigorous depends entirely on the course. Several of them have proctored exams and are just as challenging as an in class counterpart. Some are fluff. I like fluff, some of it I did just for credits, but most are 400/4000 level courses, and the professors will write letters that describe my abilities academically... My understanding is basically if they aren't core prereqs, they aren't heavily weighted anyway...

I took several gen ed and elective courses online and they all just showed up as normal courses so I don't think an adcom will care if it is from your university- though I will say that a couple of my online courses required a ton of reading and were actually quite time consuming so for them to be boosters to your GPA you will still want to work.
