Anyone care to share some thoughts on how they would go about picking between these two schools? OOS for UIC (got placed at Chicago), so the costs would be enormous... and having received my financial aid letter yesterday, it wasn't too awesome (read: all loans). Cincy is higher ranked, but should I be basing my decision on that? LA born and bred, so Chicago would have all the diversity and urban neighborhood amenities similar to a big west-coast city, but it's so hard to justify the costs of tuition based on that alone. At least for Cincy I would get in-state tuition after one year...

Help?

Cincinnati, for sure. Better programs in general, and it's not so F'ing expensive.

which program did you like better when you interviewed? i guess also think about where you think you'll thrive. after all, ranking doesn't matter if you don't do well right?

Ha. I know nothing about football (needed to look up what the Bengals were before responding... :T).

I liked both programs, but since I'm really geared towards public health, it would be nice to have a school of public health attached to the med school like UIC has... Cincy doesn't have much in the way of established public health connections with its md program. I also like that UIC has the two special track programs available, Urban and Global Medicine... Cincy doesn't have that, but I don't know how important actually participating in those programs is, in light of getting a good residency, etc.
I rather enjoyed the MMI process at Cincy, although I don't know how that speaks to the program in general. I was wondering how cohesive the class at Cincy is...

Anyone feel that being in a big city like Chicago and possibly being in one of UIC's special programs (I haven't been accepted yet) is worth the crazy tuition cost? Or can I find all those things at UC without having to pay so much for tuition?

If by cohesive you mean how well the classes get along and help/support classmates, then I would say UC is great (at least that's how I feel about the current M1s). If that's not what you ment let me know and I'd be happy answer what your asking.

UC does have 4 special tracks available in Peds, Geriatrics, Neuro and Nutrition if any of those are your interest and doing those special tracks are your thing.

I just received notice that i was invited to interview for the GMed and UMed programs at UIc... If I get into either one will it make a stronger case for going to UIC over Cincy, even with the higher costs factored in? Thoughts?

Is UIC a four year or five year MD, MPH? If it's a four year program, it really doesn't matter where you go. Why? If you do your MPH coursework while in med school, your public health classes--no matter how interesting, unique, or cool they might be--will always be second fiddle to your med school coursework. My point is that you might get more out of any unique experiences UIC might offer if it is a five year program, but if it's a four year program, you're probably not going to get anything special out of it that you wouldn't get out of a standard four year MD, MPH program at Cincy

A good friend of mine is an M4 at Cincy. Cincy, after year one, allows you to claim in-state residency status, at least they used to - something to check on as the reduction in tuition costs are substantial.

This. It's equivalent to a 15 grand scholarship that everyone gets for three years.

I hate debt with a passion, so for me that would settle the argument right there.

Brachyury,
The UIC program is a special interest track, you don't get an MPH out of it (and I already have mine). It just provides the cohort in the track to do a longitudinal project over the course of 4 years, and they have a special curriculum for either track too.

And yes, Cincy will allow you to establish OH residency to get in state tuition after the first year.
