Hello everyone!

I want to inform you all about a fantastic opportunity for medical students or recent MD/DO graduates. This is an update to a previous SDN post. We are looking for students with a gap year or who did not match this cycle.

Pre-Residency Research Fellowship at Pacific Clear Vision Institute (PCVI) and Oregon Eye Consultants (OEC)

Dr. Balamurali Ambati and Dr. Allan Hunter are interested in recruiting a medical student or MD graduate interested in a future career in ophthalmology for a 1-year fellowship with the unique opportunity to gain clinical and research experience (usually 60% clinical, 40% research, but this is flexible). You will be working primarily with Dr. Ambati, an anterior segment specialist, and Dr. Hunter, a retina specialist.

Clinically, the fellow would be in clinic (primarily cornea/refractive, cataract, retina with some plastics and glaucoma) assisting with patients, learning the elements of the ophthalmic exam, assisting in minor procedures, seeing interesting anterior segment and retinal pathology, and optimizing clinic flow. At PCVI, the fellow may contribute as a technician and scribe, learning how to workup patients. At OEC, the fellow will have ample opportunities to interpret imaging, examine dilated patients, and refine their fundus and peripheral exams. The fellow will also watch or scrub into ophthalmic surgical procedures every week. You will also see the continuity of care as patients undergo surgery or are referred between clinics. If fellows are interested, they may also follow the cornea fellow to see interesting on-call consults at the hospital.

On the research side, the fellow would be expected to participate and facilitate ongoing clinical research projects. These include prospective studies, retrospective studies, research reviews, case reports, and posters for national conferences. The fellow will have the unique opportunity to manage and learn about IRB approvals and maintenance. There is also a large degree of freedom to explore research interests, including potentially starting your own prospective study. Dr. Ambati also has his own lab at the University of Oregon at Knight’s campus, where fellows may contribute to basic science research. You will have the chance to obtain several publications, including as the first author.

A little more about the clinics:
-Pacific Clear Vision Institute is a 3 MD, 3 OD, and 1 cornea fellow practice in Eugene, OR.
-Oregon Eye Consultants is a 6 MD (4 retina, 1 anterior segment, and 1 comprehensive specialist) practice with clinics in Eugene and Springfield, OR.

To apply, please email Dr. Ambati with a pdf of your SFMatch application:

This will be a valuable opportunity for aspiring Ophthalmologists to (1) augment their clinical ophthalmic repertoire to shine at away rotations (2) work on and publish clinical research (3) work with and learn from amazing technician and support staff (4), work under incredibly kind mentors who are invested in you and your success both personally and professionally (5) grow as a student, scientist, and future Ophthalmologist!
