Another year’s match has come and gone. Everyone should be proud of your achievements so far, regardless of outcomes. For those who may not a plan set up for next year, we would like you to know about a great opportunity at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). This one-year program offers a chance to participate in research at our institution and to meet and be part of a great team of ophthalmologists and will be a great asset for future applications to ophthalmology.
The Research Fellowship is a one-year program with Dr. David Fleischman (glaucoma) and Dr. Alice Zhang (surgical retina) at UNC. This program has been in place for the past 6 years. The vast majority of students who came through were successful in securing an ophthalmology residency the very next year (9 out of 10) and 3 became UNC residents. Particularly if your home school did not have an ophthalmology program, or if you feel that research is a weakness of your application, please strongly consider this program.
The research fellow can help take over projects that are ongoing and not yet completed by our current fellows. The year is aimed to begin in March/April 2021 until Apr 2022 (can be altered depending on your needs). Projects are mostly clinical, some requiring review of databases, others requiring recruitment and interaction with patients in the clinic setting. During your research year, you will also have the opportunity to shadow in the OR, and in the clinic, attend resident teaching and attend wet lab sessions.
Both supervisors are excited to mentor you towards the next step in your career. You will be given sufficient time off needed to attend all interviews. If you have any questions or are interested in working with Dr. Fleischman and Zhang for the 2021-2022 year, please send a letter of interest (short paragraph) to Melissa at [email protected]. If you were an applicant to UNC through SF match, you do not need to forward your application. Please specify your SF ID#.
