It's an excellent school. Their clinical centers treat everything, including bread and butter cases. Their curriculum also gives you the opportunity to explore frequently-you are given one week every 6ish weeks to go shadow a doctor or do something medically related (you can do this anywhere in the country as long as they approve it, and they usually do). There are also so many international opportunities, that make sure you'll be able to see everything.

In terms of students and culture, Mayo cares about it's students a great deal. A lot of schools say they listen to student feedback, but not a lot of schools have the capital to make changes and some don't give any examples at all. Mayo however provides plenty of examples of how student feedback changed the curriculum/atmosphere. Mayo also provides a lot of capital for student health experiences. For example, you can get a camping trip approved as a student health experience and Mayo would fund it. Also every student gets a laptop.

I'm not sure if they publish their match list, but I've seen it and it's pretty damn impressive. Students seem to match into exactly what they want, regardless of competitiveness or prestige.

Also, let's not forget it has the least average indebtness upon graduation (currently 70k for the graduating year, but they are on track to be at 50k for the current ms1s).

Something that's more anecdotal; highest step 1 scores of any medical school in the country. These numbers are entirely self reported and not standardized in any way so they don't mean much.

The most important thing about Mayo though, is their sheer dedication to their patients. Every medical school says they are dedicated to their patients and focus on patient care etc. (and most are) but Mayo really is that type of institution. There are very few schools imo that truly take the humanistic perspective to the next level. Mayo is one of them.

Don't get me wrong though, Mayo has downsides (just like every other school) that one has to consider if given options for schools. Some examples: Mandatory 8am class, small class size can be a downside depending on who you are, location, etc.

tldr: IMO Mayo should be considered a top tier institution along side many others (JHU, Harvard, UCSF). And, it's is a perfect example of why anyone shouldn't rely solely on usnews rankings to determine how good a school is. Especially considering the best school is the one you "fit" in with the most, not the one with the highest ranking.
