Lady Bug,
Ophthalmology residency is a total of 4 years (1 transitional year plus 3 years of ophthalmology). Fellowships are available in pediatrics, glaucoma, oculoplastics, neuro-ophthalmology, retina, cornea and more! Fellowships are usually between 1-2 years in addition to residency. You can find more general information on the field at www.aao.org or see a list of some available fellowships at www.sfmatch.org. You might also try some of the medical school websites that have departmental information for their clinical areas of study.
From what I've heard (and what's been posted on SDN), it's a very competitive specialty, but not as much as it used to be.
Hope this helps! 🙂
