Just wondering how long is Optho residency? What type of fellowship programs are out there in optho? How competitive is it? Thanks. :)

A better place...
Lady Bug,

Ophthalmology residency is a total of 4 years (1 transitional year plus 3 years of ophthalmology). Fellowships are available in pediatrics, glaucoma, oculoplastics, neuro-ophthalmology, retina, cornea and more! Fellowships are usually between 1-2 years in addition to residency. You can find more general information on the field at or see a list of some available fellowships at You might also try some of the medical school websites that have departmental information for their clinical areas of study.

From what I've heard (and what's been posted on SDN), it's a very competitive specialty, but not as much as it used to be.

Hope this helps! :)

For those who matched into optho, what was your board score? Also what programs did you match into. And in your opinion, how competitive is this specialty nowadays....
