How competitive are oral surgery/MD residencies? What's the advantage of having the MD in addition?

Oral Surgery post-doctroal residencies are highly competitive. It's definitely up there in the top three behind Ortho and Endo! I've already spoken to 5 OMS/MD residency directors around the country about what they look for and they all have said high GPAs and NBDE scores plus additional credentials!

Advantage of having a MD degree? The advantages/options are endless! If you want to stay in the dental world, then a MD degree will allow you to do many other surgical procedures that a 4-year Oral Surgery program graduate can't do like many facial plastic surgery and reconstructive procedures. Now if you want to branch out from the dental world, it's a MD degree for god's sake, you can do Cardiovascular Surgery, Neuro Surgery, or what ever else you would like to specialize in the world of medicine (further schooling of course)!! Essentially, when you finish a 6-year OMS/MD program, you're a MD doctor who's also has DDS/DMD and OMS behind your name OR a DDS/DMD with OMS and a MD initials behind your name!

Which ever way you look at it, you're DA bomb!! <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

Yah-E:
I am also interested in Oral surgery. I have spent about 100 hours following two different oral surgeons in the OR and in their office and I absolutley love it! Obviously high grades and board scores are essential but what do you think the directors of these programs meant when they said "additional credentials"? Just curious, really. I am starting at Case Western this summer and was just curious what "additional credentials" may boost my chances. Thanks.

Budfrog,

Additional credentials = research and externships during your pre-doctoral dental education. If you would like more info, email me, I'll send you some cool stuff!!

Yah-E do you have any cool stuff for people thinking about Endo? Just curious.

Thanks

Its a 2 year program. Almost nobody gets in without a GPR, AEGD, or practice experience. Why stop at RCT, when you can do the post core and crown as a GP
