This year we're using the newest edition of the organic chemistry wade book (the 5 ed i believe--with stripes on the front cover) and I want to avoid paying $186 for the package of the book & solutions man in the bookstore...
The problem is that since it is new and they used the old version last year this edition hasn't been circulating used on the internet. What can I do? I can find the book itself a little cheaper online but not the solutions man...

Any advice would be appreciated!

*thanks

it does suck that its a new edition (and that it costs so friggin' much), so a true "solution" may not be apparent.

the only actual advice I could give is to shop around at other bookstores that compete with your school's store (other schools, third-party companies, eBay, whatever).

something to consider, though: are you really married to the idea of owning the solutions manual? I bring this up due to personal experience. when I entered my soph. year and prepared for the organic series, I myself bought the solutions manual to McMurry's 5th edition. I said at the time, "That's $70 well spent! I'm going to be such a bad-@$$ pre-med, look out Hopkins!"

Turns out, I used the solutions manual EXACTLY ONCE, gave it to my girlfriend, and proceeded to get my three A's in the ochem sequence without the damn thing. to pour salt in the wound, McMurry came out with a 6th edition this year, so I couldn't even sell the stupid thing back to the bookstore. blech.

oh well, just food for thought😉

The solution manual to the Wade's Organic Chem book is VERY helpful. It got me 2 A's.

HEY!

Go to your school's library and search for the previous edition of the text. If your school is anything like Ohio State (mine) than the old version would have been "on reserve" (you can check it out, but it can't leave the library) but now that it is an OLD VERSION, it should be available in the regular book stacks.

If you can make it through the first 3 weeks with the old version, you can probably make it through finals. If not, you just buy the brand new book, which you would have been stuck doing anyway.

I made it through Orgasmic Chemistry Lab via this method. The inconsistencies with the newest version gave me an excuse to "study" with the hot girl, plus she complimented me on my brilliant money-saving scheme.

Just make sure to renew the book as often as needed, and have your buddy check the book out for you if you have reached your renewal limit.

Go Bucks! THE REPEAT BEGINS THIS SATURDAY!!!
