A Friend who works at Kaplan told me that it is looked down upon to take Orgo II (or I) over the summer because it doesn't show that you can handle heavy course loads. UIC and SIU Dental School Deans came to my school to speak and also said they look to see how rigorous our course loads are. I'm at Uni. Illinois at Urbana/Champaign and the Organic series is taught 100% online (labs in person) and its quite a mess/disaster, many people have bad grades i'll be lucky if i can pull off a B. I'm currently in Orgo I and i want take Orgo II over the summer so I can just focus on that and not let it hurt my GPA.
What do you guys think?

Since when is Orgo online at U of I? I know they had lecture videos online incase you missed but since when is it all online and you cannot attend lectures??

Just curious. It sounds absurd for them to change it. Also, take it over the summer along with another course. It's not bad to take summer courses-just take full course loads in the fall too.

I took Orgo II this past summer and worked my a** off to get an A. I have a degree in engineering (which is obviously challenging), but i can honeslty say that taking Orgo II in 5 weeks was one of the hardest experiences of my life. I'm taking 14 credits of 400-level sciences classes currently, and i think it's easier than my orgo summer term class was. Moreover, because it was so intense, it definately helped me prepare for ochem on the DAT (26 on that section).

If you can handle orgo in the summer, it definately shows that you can handle an intense load.

its really quite absurd and has the students and staff really buzzing around complaining, they are trying to make the switch to online way too rapidly. Lectures (webcasts )and discussions (online conferences) are 100% online. Every online exam has failed so far, and we have had to take written exams, after we have been practicing and studying how to take them online. They do offer an 8AM discussion section for "students who prefer person to person interaction), however i from what i hear it is no help. Basically i'm worried that if i take another semester of orgo along with my cell bio, physics, etc. My gpa will take a hit.

What other class would you suggest taking in addition to Orgo II

Classes I will have completed by this upcoming summer:
Intro Bio sequence
Intro Chem sequence
Molecular Genetics
Physics I
Ochem I

The thing is I'll be working, volunteering, and shadowing, so I don't want to overload my summer, Orgo II is already really tough as it is, you know?

Do you have to take Orgo II?? What is your major? If you don't have to take it (and most d schools don't require it) then go with something easier (upper level Bio courses!!!) Well, not that they are easy, but they require much less time commitment and don't have so many parts (lecture, discussion, lab).

With less than a dozen ds that require between 4-6 credits of organic, instead of the usual 8, it can hardly be claimed that "most don't require it".

Sorry, some schools have changed since I applied to them last. However, both Illinois schools do not require 8 hours of organic chemistry.

Thanks for correcting me! I hadn't looked into most schools and shouldn't have assumed I knew!

So...I guess if you're looking at non-IL schools you'll need it!

that is true, both illinois schools don't require 8 hours of orgo. However, I feel that i will be limiting my chances of getting into to ANY dental schools if i don't take it. My gpa is 3.5 now, and it DEFINITELY drop after this semester (thanks ochem 🙂) and i feel that if i don't make it into the illinois schools, i have a better shot somewhere else if i go above and beyond in the prerecs.
BTW, i do plan on taking a biochem class.
