Ok I overheard some of you have already been accepted, you eventually wann give us your shinning luck and say where you got accepted, as of now only the non-match programs are informing the students.

Best of all for everyone

Since Colorado has 16 positions, I'm sure somebody has heard of somebody getting in there this year. Can anybody elaborate?

Has anyone gotten into the University of Toronto or University of Manitoba ortho for 2007?
I'm first on the waitlist and I'm wondering if there is any chance someone will turn down their spot after the match?

I'd love to still have some hope!!!:)

Thanks.

I don't know anything about the acceptances at Canadian schools. However, I've got a few ?s for you (if you don't mind).

How many positions are available for ortho in Canada? Do programs in Canada tend to accept international students, including Americans? I'm not sure what the exact % is, but U.S. ortho programs have a fair # of international students, including some Canadian. Anyone know the #s on this?

I cannot fathom why anyone would *hope* to spend the next 3 years of their life in Toronto or Winnipeg... Abandon all hope, child, run whilst you still can!

LOL, sometimes I wonder if I should be thankful that the match landed me in Nashville instead of Morgantown (although I feel they have a good program there).

As far as the Canadian programs go, from what I hear, most of them won't consider newbie graduates and instead want people who have 2 - 3 or more years of general practice experience. There aren't very many spots - there are like less than 15 dental schools in Canada and not all of the dental schools have ortho programs.

Ya,

spots are pretty limited in Canada: UofT=4, Western=3, Alberta=3, Manitoba=3.
You have to be out at least 2 years and top 10 in your class. I'm not sure about internationals though, but I don't see why not they are looking for the best applicants period.

Toronto is a pretty great city actually, IcedOMFS you should visit sometime.
Winnipeg not so much!

My only hope is that someone else matches in the States.
It is tough to do dentistry with my fingers crossed.

If you want to make your trip worthwhile, I would visit either Montreal or Vancouver.

Go HABS !

Wow. Only 13 spots for ortho every year in all of Canada, eh? No wonder Canadians apply to programs in the states.

Some programs in the states actually prefer international applicants for some or many of their positions. I've heard BU has many people w/ an international background. I can think of other programs that "reserve" spots for internationals. At some schools it's only one spot, other schools it's more than that. That means fewer spots for traditional U.S. Match folks.

Those programs are not looking for the best applicant period. They may be looking for the best applicant(s) from the U.S. pool for certain spots and the best applicant(s) from a separate non-U.S. pool.

I would guess if there's no history of accepting internationals or U.S. applicants in Canada (if that is the case), it happens for a reason. Likewise, some programs in the states accept international applicants for a reason. It's not as random as some may suggest. In many cases, program directors have connections w/ people all over the world and "reserve" spots for them in U.S. programs.

I've heard the AAO has looked into this issue (the # of international students in U.S. orthodontic programs). I wonder if the situation has stayed the same or increased in the last 10 years or so. Anyone know?

Which schools are non-match?

I'll tell you of the ones I'm familiar with. UNLV, Jacksonville, Colorado, Arizona, and Loma Linda. Tufts and Minnesota used to play non-Match, but switched the last year or two.

All the positions at Loma Linda and UCLA have been offered and accepted. Colorado has extended positions also.

So I guess that means nobody is going to turn down Toronto then?

So close yet so far....
