A graduate with average class rank and board score practices general dentistry for 2-3 years (after one year of GPR or AEGD). With the gained experience, will this dentist be just as competitive as a recent graduate with high class rank and high board scores with research, etc.?

Basically what I am asking is that do few years of GP bypass class rank/board score for competitive residencies such as ortho?

unfortunately, the Board score and class rank seem to be the 1st hurdle in the initial weed-out to even get your application looked at. your best bet is to work contacts, play politics, and perhaps begin research or even an MS with a faculty member who has a lot of pull at the specific program you want to attend.

Most ortho residency programs will continue to look at the "numbers". If ortho is where you want to be, a program director will look at your years of GP experience and ask if you did anything to beef up your CV (ie retake Part I, additional research, etc.) Hope that helps.
