i would be grateful to hear from any PAs out there who practice in orthopaedics...although one of the reasons i chose to become a PA is the freedom to move among disciplines, it is my dream to become involved in ortho, especially ortho surgery. i am already looking into the residency programs offered for PAs, and have done a lot of research into the subject of ortho PAs, but i would love some personal stories-what exactly you do, the kind of hours you work, your typical day, etc. thanks so much for your input!! -peace JD

I don't work in ortho but one of my best friends does, so I will tell you about his practice:
(he is residency trained by the way)
base salary 92k + production bonus with full benefits, also he will be a partner in the practice in a year and they are paying off all his loans on a year for year basis.
50% O.R. time
50% clinic/hospital rounds
takes ER/floor call 8 days/month
avg work week about 45-50 hrs including all of the above
first assists on procedures on professional sports figures + routine knees, shoulders, spine, etc.
published in several prominent medical journals as first and second author

seriously consider a residency if you want a job like this. a general surgery residency with ortho electives is probably more flexible in terms of future jobs because you will have a broad surgical background instead of just ortho. good luck-e
