I am a 2nd year planning out year 3 and was wondering if it would be a good idea to postpone something like neurology/peds and do an away rotation in orthopedics? Or should I just wait until year 4 to do away rotations? I know it is invaluable to do away rotations when applying for a competitive residency, and we don't have much time before interviews during 4th year to get this done-- maybe 2 at most...

Any thoughts?

are you interested in ortho, or why the rush to do it?

Most places want you to have finished your cores before coming for an away. There are some things they are less interested (psych, for example), but you'll have to check with the individual programs.

Also, remember that if you're doing the away to get yourself known at that program it's best that you have a reasonable amount of clinical expereince under your belt -- I can't imagine less than 6 months -- so you can shine. I'd think that April of M3 is probably the earliest you'd want to go away.

Finally, if you're not interested in peds (or clerkship x), take it early when you're more likely to be fumbling around finding your bearings.

don't do an away in ortho before July of the year you are applying. You want to be remembered with the current group of rotators, and you want the current residents to know who you are when rank list time comes.

ortho 2003 - would you agree that doing a rotation, w/ no other students there, where you bust your ass and get a great letter from the chair or PD would go long way towards getting a spot? I have seen it work; and I have the opportunity to start my forth year electives early on, around may or so. Thanks for all responses
