For those of you who spend vast amounts of time reading this site, you will probably be annoyed at my asking this. I'm sure others have posted answers to this question. However, as a relatively new SDN member, I find myself wondering... Plus, I've been accepted at GA-PCOM and am strongly considering attending. So here are my questions:

1. I think I understand that, at least for allopaths, a categorical residency means you are in the same residency program from pgy1 on. I've come to understand (maybe incorrectly) that all D.O.s are required to complete a general pgy1 year and then move on to residency. So in your MS4 year, say you know you want to do ob/gyn, do you have to re-match in ob/gyn after your general pgy1 year, or do you get accepted to a pgy1 year that automatically transitions you into a 4 year residency in ob/gyn?

2. If in your MS4 year you match an allopathic residency such as ob/gyn, do you still have to do a general pgy1 year, or can you go straight into a categorical allopathic residency?

3. How hard is an AOA ob/gyn residency to get?

If you do an osteopathic residency you will need to do a one year internship... I plan on doing this. If you decide on an allopathic residency you may not need an internship... but that is an entirely different discussion.

Many internships are linked to a residency... many are not. All programs are different.

Go to http://opportunities.aoa-net.org/search/search.cfm

This is an AOA website that lets you search for all the osteopathic residencies and internships. There is some info about each program on this site, but I have found that copying the name and googling for the hospital website will provide a lot more answers to your questions.

Good luck,

S
