I would like to ask would anyone can tell me which Uni, Auckland or Otago has a better teaching quality in providing the Bachelor of Medicine (MBChB)??? I have found some info from the web and I wonder how some taiwan websites can show that Otago Medical School is in the fifth place worldwide!!

I'm final year at Auckland Med School. I have friends who have studied at Otago and have worked with a number of Doctors from both Medical Schools.

As far as reputation, teaching and quality of graduates I would say they are exactly the same. Which you should go to depends on which will accept you and lifestyle issues.

Final year otago here agree with pianoman. Go to the med school that accepts you :) there are heaps of discussions on this topic in this forum so do a search for previous threads.

Firstly, thanks for your posts. However, I would like to know where can I obtain the information on the world ranking in medicine as Otago claimed that it has been in the 5th place worldwide for the faculty of medicine...

What is this ranking based on? Where is the website claiming this? Most rankings from what I understand are based on how much research money a particular school has, the impact of papers published there etc. It is very hard to objectively rank schools on such nebulous qualities as teaching quality/ability of graduates.

As much as I think otago's medical education has been as good as any I could have got anywhere else in the world, I doubt otago could have been ranked 5th in terms of research/impact etc. The reason is simple. Pure economics. If you are insatiable about rankings (american?) the time's higher education supplement (or whatever its called) ranked the entirety of auckland university quite a bit higher than the entirety of otago university. Make of that what you will.

If you're intending to practice inside australasia. Noone cares which school you went to and it will have no impact on specialising. If you intend on practising in the US, they will likely have never heard of either school and presume electricity is a new thing here. I must admit I am suprised how many UK professors/doctors have heard of Otago and rate it highly, probably because before the last ?30-50 years or so NZ grads had to go to UK to specialise because the infrastructure simply wasnt here.
