Throught my life I have been interested in attending either attending law school or medical school. I have been doing so much research into the both and still can't decide which one I would enjoy more. I plan on doing both applications when the time comes around (if I can afford it! lol).

What other career path do you guys have that might make you reject med schools.

get real.

shadow doctors, talk to lawyers. figure out what you want to do with your life first. the last thing a med school admission committee wants to hear is an applicant who is indecisive about actually becoming a doctor.

as for other career paths, I have thought about investment banking and law. I really just find medicine more interesting and of more value to society, instead of a profession that leaches off society.

just do an M.D/J.D combined program and do malpractice law, or work as the in-house legal counsel for a big hospital, or just practice medicine with the added benefit of two extra letters after your name

Just try to get as much direct experience in both fields as you can. For medicine, you can shadow physicians or try to get a summer internship at a hospital where you can hopefully see what its like to be around and take care of sick people. I'm sure there are similar internships available for prelaw students.

Even if I hit the Powerball sometime in the next couple of years I'll still go to medical school just for the challenge of medical practice, but I do have backup plans. None of them, however, would ever take precedence over medicine. 👍

I don't know how far along in your education you are, but you if you're this undecided, do NOT apply now---especially to so many programs. You're likely to get stuck with something that will make you unhappy for a few years. If you can, take time off and get a job as a lab technician for a year (40+ hours a week). Get a view of researcher's job and see if you still enjoy it. At least you'll get an idea of whether you'd rather do a PhD or at least do clinical medicine.

Someone else mentioned the shadowing. While this step helps, it limits your view of the profession to just a few hours, and through the eyes of only a handful of practitioners. You can get a job as a CNA or EMT to see if you want to stay on the physician route.

Finally, about law: Are you f*cking crazy!? Look, I love argumentation as much as the next guy---and I'll probably end up getting a JD in my 30s or 40s. But I have my reasons and am not trying to get into law school simply because the field is interesting. Many of my friends are either law students or are practicing attorneys. All but two of them are miserable with where they are in life, despite having other friends tell them not to go into the field. The hours are hellalish, the work is downright boring, and most people will fear you instead of respecting your career choice.
