got secondary from UAB today. Do they screen before sending secondaries to out of state applicants or does everyone get one?

I'd love to go to UAB but my numbers are not super high(3.86, 11/11/10). I've heard that only superstars get in at UAB as out of state applicants. Anyone have any info on just how selective UAB is with giving interview invites to out of staters?

as far as i can remember, i do think they screen amcas applications before sending out secondaries. i'm an out of state applicant for uab as well (from cal), but decided to go on and send out the secondary. it's not that much as compared to others, if i recall it's $65, and the questions aren't that bad. you got a good shot, you have excellent stats. good luck!

thanks man. I wish 3.86/32 were excellent stats, but I think they are inferior for out of state apps at UAB. Only 1/7 of the class can come from out of state(which is 10-15 people I guess). I would guess those 10-15 spots are filled with 3.9/37 applicants with tremedous extras. I guess you are right though....65 bucks isn't that much in the long run, and it is an easy secondary except for sending the pic file.

dont bother with the secondary. Unless you went to a top 15 college those numbers will not get you an interview at UAB if you arent from bama. Youd just be throwing away money. send me the check instead and focus on your state schools and private schools. You have good stats just not special enough to crack into UAB out of state

Spinestudent, I know two people that interviewed there from out of state that had about the same GPA as you and a 30 on the MCAT, so I would say go for it. However, I am from Tennessee, a border state, so perhaps they give some regional preference. Also, even if only 1/7 of the class comes form out of state, they still offer a lot more acceptances to out-of-staters than they actually enroll, so your chances are probably better than they seem.

but Im sure they got rejected circadiaman if they had a 30 mcat. a 30 mcat is the absolute min to get an out of state secondary. So that means spinestudent would spend several hund bucks on an interview trip without much of a shot. Ill put 500 dollars against 1 dollar that he wont be offered an acceptance there

can others join in on this sweet action?? 😀

The out of state acceptances may be misleading. Don't forget about those MD/PhD people! Residency doesn't matter for those applicants, and I think the UAB MSTP accepts about 7-10 MD/PhD candidates each year. Maybe less, I can't remember. So out of stater acceptances for the MD only track is a little bit lower than you think.

Hello,

It is suggested that interviews for out of staters usually require > 3.5 GPA & > 35 MCAT.

For 2002, there were 23 non-resident matriculants, with 6 of them being MD/PhD.
For 2003, there were 16 non-resident matriculants, with 8 of them being MD/PhD.

BTW, I really think all of my out-of-state colleagues are bona-fide geniuses.

Any questions? PM me 😀

Yours,

well damn.....I think I'll save the $65 and buy some lotto tickets....I'd probably have better odds 🙁

Call me a genius then (but you'd be the first to ever do that!)....just got into UAB out-of-state. For those who might be interested, I got a 40 on the MCAT, have a 3.7 gpa, and have been teaching 4th grade for 2 years.

wow johnny, 40/3.7. Where do you think you will end up actually matriculating? congrats on that sort of package(with the teachibg too....I know what thats like)

Even though this is an old thread, I just had to post. You DO NOT have to have an extremely high MCAT or come from a high ranked school to get in out of state. I come from a mid range public state school, and had a 32/3.9 with relatively little clinical experience to speak of. Just because you don't have great stats does not mean you can't get in. Just have something that makes you stand out, and a really good reason to want to go there (and this does not have to be a connection with the state, just a reason for the med school itself).
