hey med students!

i am from california, and i'm planning on going to med school in a different state. i know when applying to state med schools that it matters if one is an instate resident. i'm curious, though, does specific state residence matter for some residency programs as well? would it be easier to attend a california med school as opposed to an oos med school (if i wanted to match into a california residency program)?

sorry, if this is a silly question 😳

I was wondering this too.

I was also curious how the transitinoal year thing works. Do you make two matchlists? Do you go on separate interviews for the transitional year?

I have been told on certain interviews that it is easier to get a california residency if you went to school in cali, however it is not a requisite.

Check this thread out:

do all state schools give priveledge to state residents?

If not, which states do? can someone help me find a link or give me some more info on this?

I have some thoughts for you to read there.

As for PGY, there are plenty of states that want to grow their own talent, but the most competative ones are looking to get the best residents overall. It's much easier to leave your state for residency than medical school.

Sorry I didn't read your whole post.

Also check this thread regarding prelim years:

Is there a difference between FYGME and PGY-1? Would a 'transitional year' be considered a FYGME? and after medical school, do you have to do a transitional year, or can you go straight into residency?

For example, if residency programs I am looking at (emergency med) are three years (PGY-1 to PGY-3), will there have to be a transitional year before that?

thanks for helping out the newbie.

Some places have categoricals that include the whole stay. You will likely interview for both preliminaries and advanced slots if you are doing something like rads, gas, derm, EM, psych, etc. that has a prelim year associated even if your first choice is to match categorically (if that is a word).

Read my comments about the difference between "preliminary" and "transitional" as well as the correction I had to make to my original response.

with transitional/prelim years, you end up making a primary and secondary rank list. you make the advanced residency programs (and any categorical programs) your primary rank list and then for each of the advanced programs, you also make a secondary rank list. the secondary match list will contain your preferences for where you want to go if you match with the pgy2 programs in your primary list.

so you end up interviewing for your intern year positions and your advanced positions.
