Hello guys!

Some of my pre-dents friends in Canada paid ~$1500 US to stay in a 3rd world country for a week doing dental mission trip. They even told me that the dentists allowed them to do simple extractions 😱 They sounded like they actually enjoyed the whole experience even though their original intentation was to make their applications look unique.

So, now I am considering going on the same mission trip since it's something I want to do constantly as a dentist. But I am not sure how much it would help dental school application to US school.

Is going on oversea mission trip a common things that pre-dents do?

For those who went on, how was your experience? And did you go with the intention to boost up your application?

For those who went on, do you think it's actually a key component that makes you stand up from other applicants?

plz share your thoughts. Thank you so much!

I did a humantarian in East Timor for two weeks..it's really life changing and makes you see life in a different perspective. We saw over 300 patients and had min supplies. All we did of course were extractions and handed out meds for infections. I'm sure it would help for dental school but do it out of your heart. Watch the move MOTORCYCLE DIARIES[/I]...it's an awesome movie. The 23 yr old reminds me of myself when I experience my mission.

Anyhow, I didn't go with the intention to boost my application. I come from I guess I can say below poverty line and have been on mission to help others....so my heart is out to help those who are in desperate need.

However, I think it will stand out in your application because not everyone is doing it vs. shadowing a dentist or volunteering at YMCA. But if your planning to do it as a dentist, then just wait until your done with dental school. Either way..if you go now or later..you will make a big difference in these peoples lives. It's awesome on little things we do and that can make a big difference. Anyways, volunteer at a community dental clinic..they need the help too.

Tomorrow is my first day volunteering at a community dental clinic!...just curious, how do you sign up or find a humanitarian mission to another country?

Awesome!! I actually did a humanitarian mission when I was active duty air force. Someone else might know of some others but here's one I came across...it's not related to dental but it's still will make a difference. www.uniteforsight.org

I actually went on a school building/teaching mission to Kenya that changed my entire life and made me find my passion in dentistry. It was the greatest experience of my life.

Listen, don't do it to boost your app. It'll be a waste. You won't appreciate it. I suggest you wait until you're a dentist because you don't seem like you're at the right maturity level to gain from this experience. It CAN change your life but only if you want it to. Go spend the $1500 to boost your DAT scores or something else.

Very wise advice 🙂

If your only reason for doing it now is to boost your application. I don't think you would appreciate the opportunity the way it should be appreciated. Boosting your application is not a very good reason to go to a "3rd world" country to do any kind of work. Impacting people requires a passion for the people and what they experience and live with. Many times our attitudes about what we do subconsciously 'seep' out to others. People in developing countries need people who would help them for them, not for some ulterior motive like boosting an application. (Before you rain insults on me, I'm an African so I have some idea of the way people back home think) I'm sure when you get your motives/reason properly 'arranged' you would make more than a postive impact on them and yourself. Good luck!

if you're looking for a humanitarian project.. there's one that goes to jamaica every november.. i found out about it through a dentist i interviewed it.. and yes while i went part cause i thought it'd be cool and part because it would help out in my apps. but it's a totally life changing experience... even though conditions are crappy.. the people you end up helping are forever grateful.. and that says it all. check out www.gsjamaica.org they're always in need of volunteers, experienced or not. and you get to stay in an all inclusive resort =)

wow, an all inclusive resort. Really a life changing experience 😀 Try camping out in the middle of the Masai Mara for a month! Now that is where th real action's at. Although we did have Masai warriors gaurding the perimeter from wild animals (i.e. elephant stampede 😀 )

I went for 2 weeks to Central America with ISL (islonline.org) and it was so worth the money. We were able to perform extractions, remove old fillings, even inject anesthesia (with some aid). It was probably the most rewarding thing I've done since most of our patients were poor children.

Now that is cool

sounds like oversea mission is worth it. From you guy's experience, it sounds you can benefit alot from it. I surely ain't going to spend $1500 US just to boost up my application.
