If you had the choice, where would you go? This decision is based soely on what type of residency you recieve.

My choice
Pakistan/India

I would go to SGU if I had the choice you presented. You are pretty much guaranteed a good residency if you excel in their program.

I would say "Carb". Carbs taste much better than Pakistanis/Indians.

SGU or Ross is traditionally what people say, though I really don't think it makes too much of a difference.

I rotated with a student from one of the Indian med schools -- she was doing an endocrine elective. From what I understand, the teaching is adequate; however, she said in terms of residencies carrib. schools get much better residencies than people coming from Indian/Pakistani schools, even US citizens from the respective places. As stated, this is only the opinion of one student.

I advise going to the websites and determine for yourself based on the residency matches they post.

the biggest advantage of the caribbean schools is that they provide clinicals in the USA. So If the choices were limited to the above, I'd choose the caribbean option, despite the attached stigma of the label " carib Grad". The advantage of US clinicals, is that they provide you with the opportunity to impress program directors of your capabilities...... that and a little bit of luck can get you a decent residency.
As far as getting into top notch residencies from the caribbean.... dont kid yourself. The graduates of these caribbean schools getting into fields such as dermatology, ENT, Neurosurgery etc, are extremely rare, and are more of an aberration, rather than the norm. In the 10+ years that i've watched these graduates, I've never met or even heard of anyone from the caribbean schools getting into the above mentioned fields.
It just isnt the case that you can get any residency, from these schools. The realistic choices are the same as they always have been...
fp, IM, prelim Sy, and maybe a few ob/gyns, rehab med, etc...

kadiyala99 is correct in the sense that it is rare for people to match in the competitive specialities from carribean schools, but from my understanding it is rarer still to match in these specialities directly from Indian/Pakistani schools.

The above link takes you directly to the page with residency appointments from Ross. If you click on the July 1st, 2002 appointments I believe the first match you see is Neurosurgery -- directly out of med school, at that. And if you look at the 2003 match, you will see a match in opthalmology. You will find interspersed orthopedic surgery matches and radiology matches as well. This is just for Ross -- SGU has a similar site with a similar profile.

Yes, it is difficult to match in these competitive specialities from a foreign school, but not impossible. And the argument that they are few and far between is certainly true -- but they also don't make up the majority of any US school match list either.

Nobody debates whether or not going to a US school is better than going to a carrib school -- it is obvious that a carrib school is an alternate means to an end. While it is true that you won't be able to get certain residencies from carrib schools, when compared to other alternatives they stack up rather favorably. But rather than trust those with blanket statements either way, as I have suggested before go directly to the source and find out the match lists from the schools. Websites as I have listed above are a quick, easy, and invaluable resource.

Go to the carrib..(i.e SGU's). They have a decent match list and you will be able to do rotatations in the US.
