for street parking in Boston, do you need a parking pass? If so, do you have to have Massachusetts tags/registration/etc.?

I need my car in the area, not to commute into/out of city, but to visit home state every so often.

Also, what areas would an out-of-stater be able to park and get decent housing

I'm lookin for 900 max rent on a studio or 1/br apt, otherwise 700 max rent on sharing.

I also have a dog.

Here are my choices for housing (no preference or order)

Allston/Brighton
Jamaica Plain
Malden
Somerville
Fenway (maybe)

I'm still waitlisted, but if accepted I'll go to BU or Tufts.

Hi,

did you also receive an email from BU in regards to the waitlist. I think as for now there are no spots but who knows. Did you apply to BU and Tufts for next year? I wish you a lot of luck!

I'm still on the waitlist for BU and Tufts...and it's looking real grim.
However, I'm doing my research now for places to live - just in case. So if anyone has any insight/info for a possible Boston student, please chime in.

If I don't get accepted this year, I'm going to reapply (for the third time).

How are you getting along? Any school decisions yet, Hopeful?

I only applied to BU last year and I am still on their waitlist....so I guess we just have to wait and see. This year I applied to other schools because i have a much better DAT score...don't give up its worth trying. When did you have your interview at BU?

Mid April...I had known the interview was for waitlist spots. In fact, I was told by my interviewer I would have been accepted on the spot had the interview not been so late. GRRRRRRR...it's all because I messed up my second year of u-grad, and BU wanted to wait to see my fall 2003 grades before inviting me.

BTW:

Doesn't someone from the Boston area have any input on my original question?

Q. for street parking in Boston, do you need a parking pass? If so, do you have to have Massachusetts tags/registration/etc.?
A. u don't need a parking pass to park on the street, but u do need to get ur car registered in state of Mass, and also u need to have a Mass license.

Q. I need my car in the area, not to commute into/out of city, but to visit home state every so often.
A. You will definately not ur need ur car to just commute in the city, as the T system is awesome, and it is the best way to travel in city, as traffic and parking both r hell here in Boston.

Q.Also, what areas would an out-of-stater be able to park and get decent housing
A. I really didn't understand what u r asking, but if u r asking about if u come out of state and would just wanna park , u can't just park on the street, what u could do is park on the meetered spots which r hard to find..., and the best area to live for time being would be right near downtown (Copley).

Q. I'm lookin for 900 max rent on a studio or 1/br apt, otherwise 700 max rent on sharing.
A. Well those r hard to find in Boston, but they r definately available. I would start looking right away, as u don't wanna start looking when all the other students r, as u wil not be able to find what u r looking for....

Q. I also have a dog.
A. Wow, thas gonna be problem, especially if u r going to dental school, as u hardly ever gonna heve time, so i think its not a good idea, and also appartments r gonna be expensive and hard to get where they allow pets...

Q.Here are my choices for housing (no preference or order)

Allston/Brighton
Jamaica Plain
Malden
Somerville
Fenway (maybe)
A. Since u said that u will be joining either Tufts or BU, well, if u join Tufts, then I would say out of all areas that u wrote Somerville is gonna be the best, also Malden is great, I would stay away from Jamaica Plain as that area is pretty shady.. Also Fenway are is cool but it gets too busy in the game time, also it is like where all the undergrads hang, and i dunno bout u, but i think it get kinda wild.... Alston and Brighton r good area, but the Green line on the T sucks, it will take u forever to go to school every morning...

I hope this helps... if u have any other questions, i would be more than happy to answer. I just finished my first year at Tufts Dental, so if u have questions about the program....

Sweet thanks Viraj...that sums up a lot of my questions.

As far as this question goes..."Also, what areas would an out-of-stater be able to park and get decent housing?"

I'm wondering what areas within/around boston have parking lots for their apt complexes along with decent rent. This way I don't have to register my car in MA. I'd like to keep Jersey tags.

BTW: the dog is a must. He's 10 years old, and my sister is just about the laziest and dirtiest girl I know in our family (extended included). And my parents can't take care of him. On top of that, he's my dog!!!! He's small, so I'm not too worried about finding an apt that can accom.

If need be, I can sell my car and probably take the train to NJ to visit...though I prefer not too...especially to go food/supply shopping at diff places. (even though the T is great and all...it's just more convenient)

Have you looked at craigslist for housing? they have a lot of apartment listings, and it will say whether they allow dogs or not. Hope this helps. Also, did you get the packet from Tufts about housing? It lists a lot of the real estate websites and gives the instructions on what to do with your car.

Guys...thanks for all the input.

One more question...how are the towns around Malden. Like Everett and Medford?

I'm settling on a place in Somerville or Malden. I'm lookin for a studio that is pet friendly, and around the 600-800 range. I know it's tough, but we'll see. Reason for these two choices was the parking situ and price. I need to keep my car registered in NJ for the next year cause I just renewed my insurance (back in June).

If anyone needs a roommate...I'm easy going, tidy (clean if you will), respectful of others space, have a small dog (Pomeranian - 10 years old, housebroken, fun, and he's a hit with the girls). I have furniture if your place needs furnishing, as well.

BTW...I got into Tufts 😀
I will also call BU up tomorrow to remove myself from the waitlist (granted I sent them a Letter of Intent....but I hope it has no bearing on my relationship with them).

Congrats! see you in about 5 weeks!

Congratulation drpheta
Being a Tufts student, I assure u that u will definately be satisfied with ur choice, and also be happy with where u gonna be...

I can't really answer any of your questions myself, but there's tons of discussion in the boston livejournal community, especially about parking. As far as I can tell, parking will become the bane of your existance... though it will probably be a bit easier at Tufts than it would be at BU. People in the community are also often looking for apartments/roommates/etc.

Good luck!
