hey everyone, i am interested in taking some spanish classes pass/fail (P/F), meaning that if I take the 6-class spanish sequence offered by my school my transcript will be filled with at least 6 P's. Would med schools look down upon that thinking i got C's in those classes? I just want to take some classes that I am really interested in without worrying about having to get an A in that class. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I think pass / fail is ok when you only do it once, MAYBE twice, but nothing more than that. P/F 6 classes wouldn't be the wisest thing to do.

I never understand posts like the one above...how do you know what is good or bad according to adcoms....there are so many schools who evaluate transcripts differently, i dont think there is a set rule.
To the OP, go right ahead and take your spanish classes pass/fail. THey are not your core pre med classes and neither are they classes required to graduate in your major, so you are fine. Common sense says that there is absolutely nothing wrong with it and it is actually smart to do this because the last thing you want is to get C's in spanish classes that are not required in your major anyway. At most, the adcoms will see it and ask you about it if necessary. Just focus on doing well in your real science classes and doing well on the mcats and having extracurriculars and it probably would not even be brought up. Plus i think it puts u in an advantage anyway when you are applying to have taken 6 spanish classes. It shows focus, i know i certainly would have never been so focused as to take 6 french classes along with all my premed courses eventhough they are pass/fail.

It's generally information I've gotten from my advisors and other students that have been accepted in previous years. Just offering my 2 cents.

So under this rule I'm screwed cause I have P/F's huh...I think not seriously at my school you can keep 3 P/F's on your transcript I used them all for spanish, because I took latin as my GER foriegn language requirement. I know for sure I got 2 B+'s and a B. Once your above a 3.7 anything below an A- drops you to the floor (and subsequently out of the bracket for graduating magna and summa, and to be named Phi Beta Kappa) so I honestly don't see why a school is gonna care if you P/Fed 3 spanish classes, especially if they weren't required as long as you have a strong academic record. Now if your borderline (i.e below a 3.5...then maybe those 6 classes could be better spent doing what most pre-meds at my school do...biological anthropology, a couple of theatre arts classes, maybe a little social psych to get a couple of easy A's and boost that cumulative GPA).

I am a senior and have already been accepted to one medical school [hopefully more to come!]. I am taking two classes next semester pass/fail simply b/c I do not want to worry about them, but would still like to take them [and have to be full time for my scholarships]. I also have a job and am busting butt on my senior research. Point being, I am taking some classes pass/fail and am not worried. However, I have already been accepted to at least one school, so I guess maybe it is a totally different case.

Sure, taking the classes A-F would look better, but if the alternative is not taking them, I think P/F is fine. You might get asked about it at an interview, so be prepared, but I think a school would value the fact that you took that many Spanish classes (a language that is very valuable in healthcare) and tend to overlook the P/F if you can actually speak Spanish.

I had about 6 P's on my transcript, mostly from Japanese classes I took for fun. I got into schools just fine.
