PathXchange | Case of the Week 24th-30th May
This week PathXchange is showcasing a case by Dr Jian-Hua Qiao as the Px Case of the Week. Dr. Qiao is from the California Hospital Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA and is an active case contributor on PathXchange.
Case Title: Case #13837
Case Information: 45-year-old female with left renal tumor and ventral hernia.
Our Px ambassador Dr Jerad Gardner comments, "This is a very nice example of a primary small cell carcinoma of the kidney, which is a very unusual location for this tumor. The tumor cells are hyperchromatic and arranged into nests and sheets, with focal areas of nuclear molding seen. Mitoses and tumor necrosis are apparent. Neuroendocrine differentiation is confirmed by strong positivity for neuron-specific enolase (NSE). Kudos to the author for excellent images of gross and microscopic pathology and immunohistochemistry as well as a nice written case history!"
