I am waitlisted at PCOM. Is there anyone else in this situation. PLease post your experience and if you know anything about the waitlist.

Also will there be people giving up their PCOM seat?

Thanks

Okay,

PCOM Waitlist. On average 40 or so come off each year. It varies of course. It is nonranked. People are chosen from the list based on how similar they are to the person who held the seat prior to releasing it.

So I think the people who come from the waitlist are pretty much who they feel would be the best additions to the class. The definition of best in this case is not neccessarily based on grades, but I am sure that is also a factor.

This is what I've heard.

Good Luck

How many people are on the waitlist? I'm trying to get an idea as to what the chances are. Also, thanks for the info - I had no idea that their waitlist is not ranked. That's so weird, but cool in a way!

I feel for the people on the waitlist. PCOM is by far the best osteopathic school (my opinion only)! I am 99% sure that I will be giving up my seat for the class of 2006 at PCOM. I do this with a heavy heart and much reservation because I loved PCOM so much. I will probably send them out a letter to decline their generous offer of admissions on Monday. If it wasn't for the fact that I might want to practice medicine overseas and an MD is more universally accepted than a DO I would definetly be at PCOM. But alas my allopathic school is calling me. Good luck and I hope my withdrawl opens up a seat to a compassionate person.

I just know the waitlist is extensive.

I don't know for sure how many, but it sounds like it is big.

Medicine2006, what are your demographics? Single? Married? Male, Female? Ethnicity?
Grades, MCAT?

Why do I ask? Because if those factors are similar to someone on the board who is waitlisted at PCOM, you might have their golden ticket.

I, too am waitlisted at PCOM. Does anyone know exactly how big it is?

They are super nice.

Call and ask and they will probably tell you approximately how large it is.

I sent my letter to decline thier acceptance yesterday. It was a very very difficult decision. I know that some of you want to know my stats and although I don't like to disclose them on a public forum I will do so here just in case it would be helpful. I am male 25 years old live in Philly but originally from California. I got a 31R MCAT and a GPA SLIGHTLY less than 3.3

Ok guys, I haven't been on this web site since august of last year when i was having an MI because I got off the waitlist at PCOM. Let me tell you that the wait was damn brutal.... I gave up a seat at LECOM the exact same day right before I got a letter in the mail from PCOM with my acceptance!
If you do a search on this site you will probably be able to see and relive the whole gory process where I wrote into this site week after week sharing my frustrations with other wailisters. The wailtist at PCOM last year did not move until late July last year. Maybe last year was a freak but whatever.... I will tell you do not give up hope!!.... I did ... but everyone around me kept saying you'll get in... and you know what they were right.

If you guys want any other advice on what I did to improve my chances you can just email me at [email protected] because it will prob. be a long time before I get on this site again.

By the way I was perusing and saw a thread about studying this summer before they matriculate.... hell no.... take the time off! I mean make some money and stuff but hell have a good time cause your in man, and that is one of the toughest parts of medical school, getting in.

:p
Good luck everybody!

Hello guys! I am also waitlisted at PCOM. I'm already anxious as anything and I have no idea how i'm going to make it through the summer! I feel in love with PCOM and that is really the only school I want to go to even though I've been accepted here in Texas. Ooooh July seems to far away! Ok just needed to let that out! I totally understand how everyone else on the waitlist feels..it sucks..bigtime! But lets hope all the waiting pays off for all of us. <img border="0" alt="[Pity]" title="" src="graemlins/pity.gif" />

Khal,

Let me ask you... Will you go to Texas if you don't make it off of the PCOM waitlist? I had a very similar choice to make, and I let my seat go at LECOM.

I'm just wondering if I'm not alone. ;-)

Star,

I will attend TCOM if I'm not accepted at PCOM. PCOM is my first choice and I would give up my seat at TCOM even if I find out in late July that i have been accepted (TCOM orientation starts last week of July and classes start the first week of August). So as you can see, it's going to be a really hectic situation if I do find out really late but it will be worthwhile. Wow you already gave up your seat at LECOM..I applaud you on that, it takes alot of conviction and guts to do that..i hope it pays off for you. Best of luck and hopefully we will be classmates beginning August :)

any new info on the waitlist? anybody get admitted from their waitlist? maybe i should forget about it till mid july, huh?

Future_DO,

If you don't have any other acceptances that you are holding in the event you are not removed from the PCOM waitlaist, you might want to put your anxious energy into completing the AACOMAS application. The application service is early this year. They started accepting applications via the online app on May 1rst. If you are going to reapply, I strongly suggest you do so as quickly as you can.

I am curious Future_DO... When were you waitlisted at PCOM? What were your stats? You can Private Message me if you are shy. I just thought we might share profiles to see if we can come up with why.

WUAS,
I have been accepted at DMU and I really like the school and I will be going there if PCOM doesnt pull me off its waitlist since it remains my top choice.
yeah...I heard about the application process being way early and I was wondering why...
I am also sending you a PM.
Thanks!

Future_DO,

I replied to your PM. I sure wish you great successes, be it at DMU or at PCOM. You are the future in medicine.

Future_DO,

I replied, but the boards crashed so many times that I think it got lost. I just sent a new reply now.

Hey Medicine2006, how are you? I know it is none of my business, but why are you choosing Howard over PCOM? I also got accepted there too, but I feel stongly that PCOM is a better school.

nope :( ...a D.O. that i shadowed attended PCOM...and she said she was waitlisted too and got accepted mid-july...
there is hope... :p

I withdrew from PCOM yesterday. I hope that my seat goes to one of you. Good luck!!!

Community,

Where are you headed instead? Congrats by the way. I wish you incredible success.

I will be attending UMDNJSOM.

community,
congratulations!!
would you be willing to share why you chose UMDNJ or PCOM? i am also waitlisted at PCOM and it remains my top choice...

thanks!

I felt that UMDNJSOM was much more diverse. At PCOM's financial aid seminar in April, I was the only black female out of approx 350 accepted students and parents. Secondly, I like the small class size at UMDNJSOM (75 students) compared to PCOM (will be about 265 students this year). Also, UMDNJSOM's tuition is $10,000 cheaper than PCOM's. Lastly, UMDNJSOM recieves more research funding than PCOM.

I forgot to mention that UMDNJSOM has a 100% Board Pass Rate compared to PCOM's 94%.

Community,

It is important to feel comfortable in a student body. So your choices make sense to me. That is as far as it goes though in my opinion.

PCOM has superior residency matching statistics according to my current online USNews subscription. ~94% of PCOM grads match their first choice. 100% match in their top 3. ~56% of their class matches in primary care. UMDNJSOM only matches around 89% first choice. I don't recall the other statistics off hand.

UMDNJSOM is a great school. In my opinion you picked it for the two best reasons. You feel comfortable with the class AND you are saving alot of money. Their education is excellent, and they are one of the only Osteopathic schools to have their own hospital on campus.

They don't, however, have a long, rich history. They also don't have quite as much prestigue or national reputation as does PCOM. They also don't have PCOM's fantastic rec center or spacious auditoriums. I thought the UMDNJSOM classrooms were a little claustrophobic.

It really is mostly opinion when you are dealing with two top notch schools. I would be happy at either I'm sure.

WishUponAStar,
Are you currently in an osteo school?

Umm, just a couple of things.

PCOM has a national reputation? Kind of hard to believe when most people don't know the difference between a DO and an OD.

The auditoriums at PCOM are big, and they can get very noisy in the back during lectures. Often there are many conversations going on during a lecture. Also, the second year auditorium (Zedeck or A2) doesn't have enough seats for the entire class. Not much of a problem most of the time, but during those few "mandatory" lectures third trimester there are people all up and down the aisles.

Finally, a 100% top 3 match rate statistic sounds a little fishy? Where did this come from? Is it for allopathic and osteopathic residencies? While the rate may be high, consider that MANY students opt for PCOM residencies, which aren't exactly the most competitive in the world. In fact there are still a bunch of open spots that go unfilled. Not too many people go out of state to allopathic or "competitive" residencies.

I just got off the PCOM waitlist yesterday. They said that there has been some movement.

Good luck to all of you

Hey Hopeful,

Would you mind sharing your demographics and stats? How were you notified of getting off of the waitlist? Letter, phone call? Did you call them? etc?

Relevant information

Gender: Male of Female?
Ethnicity: Race?
Age: ?
Location: What state do you live in?
Stats: GPA and MCAT score ?
Interview Date: ?

Those are the types of things they look at when pulling from the waitlist. By knowing these things us waitlisted folks might be able to judge what directions the list has moved. I hope I don't look like a crazy person wanting to know, but it will give us something to do while we, wait.

Thanks in advance!CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Future_DO,

Does anyone know if PCOM is accepting people right out from their last week of interviews? (Beginning of April) My boyfriend's letter was addressed incorrectly, and now they are taking their time sending it to him, and we are dying to find out if it's good or bad.... I'm worried that he interviewed so late in the game and won't get in...

Mylaina,

Tell your boyfriend to call and ask to speak with the assistant director of admissions. Either one of them will be able to tell him the status of his application. More than likely, he was placed on the waitlist or rejected. I say that because usually secretaries don't mind giving good news over the telephone, but they are reluctant to give bad news. The assistant deans of admission however, will give him whatever the news, good or bad.

I hope I'm wrong, and I wish him great luck.

Hmm, thanks... Unfortunately the first person he was dealing with was rather inept. When he called later, that person told him the letter had been sent out wrong. Is it just at PCOM that secretaries will give out good news? I haven't heard of that before....

Is the PCOM waitlist big and active?

Mylaina,

It is just the general trend at many medical schools. Instead of giving bad news, they'll just say they have no news to give or are not authorized to give a decision over the phone. However, I know personally that the assistant deans of admission or higher can and will give you the result of the application over the phone if you ask nicely, be it good or bad.

The waitlist is rather large and about 40-50 people are pulled from it each year from what I was told.

What I suggest... Monday he calls and very politely explains to the secretary that he has some questions he would like to ask one of the assistant deans of admission about his application. They should put him right through, and then he can ask and know for sure right then.

Good luck Mylaina. I'll be rooting for him.

Has anyone heard anything lately concerning the Alternate list? This waiting seems never ending.....

I'm sorry, No Khal,

Just keep waiting. Don't expect to hear anything for 3-5 weeks still.
