PD making the call for you

At some schools, I know the PD or a faculty member will make the call for you, if you really want to go to your #1 choice.

Can anyone weigh in on how helpful this is, regards to it helping to move you higher on the rank list?

To those who knows someone in which this helped or experienced this first hand, please chime in.
