Hello,
Where can I find a list of programs that offer pediatric externships? If there isn't one, would you guys mind sharing where you did your externships? thanks for your time.

Call or email program directors. Most hospital programs will let you come for a few days or a week. All it takes is a phone call--

i have done that.. but are those considered externships? for example, if i shadowed for 2 weeks some pediatric residents at a hospital, can that be considered an official externship? can i put it as an externship on my resume?

Programs have different policies as to what they'll let you do. I did a two-week externship at a hospital program where they let me observe for the first 4 days, and then put me to work for the remainder of the time.

If what you did was par for that programs externship, then list it.

Yes, that qualifies.

Check out local health dept. Most of them will let you work if you can set it up through school, and a majority of it will be pedo.

Check with your school which hospitals and programs they actually have an affiliation with. Without written affiliation, you may end up just watching procedures. My program only allows students to treat patients if the dental school has an affiliation agreement and one of the faculty at the hospital is also on the dental school faculty. I'm sure your school has an office which handles this

You should certainly ask the programs. It dosent matter if they advertise it or not, most residencies will let you visit in some capacity. Dont worry about how long it is for, pedo is a very big playing field, see as much as you can.

Agreed. Some will let you do more than others, but if you are visiting programs that you are going to apply to, that time spent with the program can be valuable.
