There has been some push to combine/integrate some of the surgical subspecialties into one comprehensive course of study. With the exception of some integrated plastics programs though, this has not been implemented in any great numbers. The most feasible ones to integrate seem to be plastics and CT.
I'm not so sure that integrating PEDS into a shortened GS residency makes much sense. Pediatric surgeons tend to be the last true "general surgeons" and perform most facets of surgical care. I think that they need the extra experience gained from a full surgical residency prior to embarking on their fellowship. IMHO, the same can be said of colorectal, surg onc, and vascular.
