peds surgery

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I haven't looked at FRIEDA for this, but chances are the list is complete. There are only ~35 spots in the country each year.

anywhere i can find a listing of peds surgery fellowships. . . i don't think FREIDA has a complete listing. . . thanks!!

FREIDA is actually complete. Unfortunately, only 31 or so spots available each year. The links above are also useful.

Does anyone actually know a peds fellow who did not do 5 years of general surgery and 2 years of research?

I heard that everyone who matched ped surg did the 2 years of research.

Just curious.

Yes, I know a pedi surg fellow who did not do two years of research and got into texas children's pedi surg fellowship. but it is rare. either do the two years or research, or, if you are like me and loathe research, you could always consider a critical care fellowship, which would A) be fun B) Still help.

It is very rare to get a peds surg fellowship without doing research first. Unless you are at an institution with a peds surg fellowship, getting one will be extremely difficult even with research.

Some years there are fewer than 20 spots available in the peds surg match because some programs only take fellows every other year. Even then, many of those spots are already promised to someone in house...either resident, a research fellow or a peds critical care fellow.

Your best bet is to do your residency in a place with peds surg fellows. Good luck!

is this true about the other fellowships too? surg onc, colorectal, etc?

Can anyone explain exactly why ped surgery is so popular and why the number of spots is so limited?

so now i have to finish gen surg residency then do research for a couple years before i can enter peds fellowship?

There just aren't that many cases, comparatively, that require the services of a fellowship trained ped surgeon.

My institution has a VERY busy peds surg service, but outside of the NICU most of the volume is straightforward general surgical care of children - appys, hernias, burns, lumps, bumps, abscesses, etc. Any hospital with a surgeon (or at least a surgeon and a pediatrician) could provide that care.

yes, pretty much

So how about the other subspecialties? How difficult is it to get in? Years of research are required for all? I saw on other links that surg onc and colorectal seem to have good lifestyles, and that pediatric, transplant and trauma are pretty hellish.. that still true?

Pediatric Surgery seems like a special situation. There are so few spots and they are tightly controlled.

Research is not required or necessary to secure a spot in most fellowships.
However, research and publications will make you a stronger applicant.
