PEM fellowship 2021!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
yup no rejections so far. one invite and one program (UT Austin) said invitations will go out within the next few weeks.

Incidentally, how many programs did y'all apply to?

Question - I applied to programs within both the EM and peds match, which have different match dates. How does this work when it comes to ranking?

I don’t think that is correct. There are different match dates for the “adult” specialties and the “pediatric” specialties, but from the past few years for sure, PEM matches on the peds specialties date which I think is 12/16 this year.

Then why are some programs listed under emergency medicine and some under pediatrics? The 3 programs I’ve gotten invites from are all under emergency medicine, which has an earlier match day in Nov: ERAS 2021 Participating Specialties & Programs

This is the response I got from NRMP:

“Thank you for contacting us. Please keep in mind that you cannot be registered for two NRMP matches simultaneously. Please review schedule of dates, and a decision will need to be made on which match you would like to participate in. If you register for the MSMP fellowship match and go unmatched, you must wait until Match Day of the MSMP fellowship to register for Pediatric Specialty Match with the NRMP.

For any additional questions, please feel free to contact us.

Regards,
NRMP Staff”

Then why are some programs listed under emergency medicine and some under pediatrics?

the only reason I have been told is that some fellowships are run through the department of emergency medicine and some are through the department of pediatrics, but all are boarded by the american board of pediatrics. so they are still part of one group despite being different in their hospital designation. so being that the programs are boarded through the ABP, you will have a peds specialty match date and one match (Pediatric Specialties Match - The Match, National Resident Matching Program). Which is why the NRMP said that you can't be part of two.

you are looking at the emergency medicine match which doesn't board PEM (Emergency Medicine Match - The Match, National Resident Matching Program). As you can see, there are 4 specialties covered in that match. So unless you are applying US, toxicology, EMS, or global emergency medicine in addition to PEM, you will be part of the peds specialties match.

Okay, cool. That’s a relief. Thanks! Couldn’t find much info elsewhere.

That's right, some are listed under peds and some under EM, but all PEM programs have their match on 12/16.

Side note - it's crazy that already 26 NICU and a bunch of PICU programs have sent out invites but only 4 PEM programs that we know of have...I'm getting antsy!

Because of the lack of travel cost associated, I think more people are applying broadly compared to the past. my PD said our program got twice as many applications as previous years which may not sound like a ton saying that, but with every program normally getting around 50 applications for 2-3 spots and and giving out 24 interviews, places are getting 100-120 applications for the same number of spots and interviews.

for those not getting love right now, just be patient. i know it feels crappy when a bunch of people are getting interviews and you aren't. I know it doesn't mean a ton but I applied to 30 my year and only see 2 of the programs I applied to that sent out interviews thus far.
