First, CONGRATULATIONS! Are you as psyched as I am?!

Second, if you're definitely going, where are you gonna live next year? On campus housing? Center City? W. Philly?

HELLSYEAH.... GO QUAKERS!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I'm pretty damn psyched.. I wanna start tommorrow! Instead, however, I'll be taking my Biomolecular Architecture exam, so I have to keep the ranting and raving short.... for now😎

Me and my friend who is starting at Penn in the fall for a Phd in Physics are looking at apartments in west philly, BTW.

Cheers,

Tom

Yo, I'll join in. I'm not sure where I'm going to live yet...but most likely somewhere in West Philly or maybe Center City. I'm from the area, so finding housing should be a little easier. Do you know what the deal is for campus housing? You guys are going to second look, right? 🙂

Gotta love Penn! 😀

Hello all!

Congratulation on your acceptances to UPenn Medical School. I am really interested in applying there and I would love to hear about the process. How were your interviews? (I have checked out the interview feedback but I would love to learn more) I have gotten into contact with Gaye Sheffler and she is so awesome. I am hopefully going to visit UPenn after my semester ends in May to tour the facilities and school. I would really appreciate any information on the process and school. I have read the brochures and website and I want to learn even more about the school. It is by far my number one pick. I love Curriculum 2000, the flexibility of the program, the idea of getting on the wards a semester early, and so much more. UPENN ROCKS! 😍 😍 😍 😍 😍 😍 😍 😍 😍

Thanks for your time

Penn's the bomb DrJ2B. I, of course, didn't get into all the top five schools, but even if I did, Penn would still be my top choice. I just look at the curriculum (clinical rotations in the second year def. rocks. I personally think it has the best curriculum of the top schools), the city, the hospital, performance on the boards and the match, the happiness of the students (i really wondered if I was interacting with med students!), the facilities that are peerless in quality, the cheap (relatively speaking) housing, the wealth of the school (you see this in the buildings like the new gym they built - AWESOME), the way they treat their med students (we get breakfast before every exam and a snack afterwards - a nice touch), the study areas and libraries...geesh...you get the point? They've got everything.
I think you make a good decision by making it your top choice. The process is utterly painless. Penn sends secondaries to everyone, and the best thing is that there're no extra essays to write. you just need to send them money and information about yourself. Interviews normally begin in October, and they're stress free. You get one with a student and one with a faculty member. All they do is try and get to know you. The interview day is packed with info sessions and tours. Decisions are mailed AND emailed out mid march. Hope this helps. Best of luck to you next year!

As for Penn Preview...You can bet your shnizzel fuhnizzel I'll be there. 😀 I'll probably be there for a week visiting my sister and some friends too.
As for on-campus housing. I hear it's convenient in terms of being close to the medical campus, but it's expensive and kinda nasty. In other words, you can find a much nicer place that's just a bit outside of campus.
Anyone know what the word is on the Art Museum area?

if you want to live on campus (i assume you mean the housing penn offers, versus university city housing on campus?), there are graduate towers (sansom west and east), where the grad students live (law, medicine, social work, education, wharton, etc). there are also some undergraduate floors. but it's not sketchy dorm housing--rooms are singles, and you share a bathroom between 2 singles, or you can have your own apartment; or double apts, w/ or w/out kitchen, etc. different varieties. rent runs b/w 500 to upper 700s i believe for the nicer rooms.

Congrats to all! I am a first year and also went to Penn undergrad, so I can try to clear up some housing questions.
First, only three people in my class actually live in the housing described above (Grad Towers). While other grad students live there, the approximately 1/3 of my class that lives in West Philly live off campus and not in those towers. There are a bunch of places in West Philly that you can find, and they are generally cheaper than the more popular Center City alternatives. Most do, however, live in Center City. A lot of first years are staying in one of two high rise apartment buildings (2400 Chestnut and 2100 Chestnut the Ambassador), but they are among the more expensive options ($750-800/month) and people generally find cheaper ($500-600) places after their first year. I live in a three story walkup brownstone-type apartment, as is typical of most housing in the area that most students live (between 15th-24th and Market-South).
Well, welcome to Penn and try to make the second look weekend if you can!

bumpity bump bump.

anyone else know what they're doing for housing?

No idea. I'll probably have more of an idea after I get down to the Penn Preview. I'm not too worried though, as anything is better than the housing availability and rents in Boston.

I'll most likely be living with a buddy of mine who will be going to Temple med in the fall, so I'll be looking for a place between Broad and 22nd or so, and preferably somewhere between Pine and Spruce.

See you all at the Penn Preview weekend.

[And to the T.S. Eliot character: Mike Tyson, the man, the myth. will be co-hosting the Jimmy Kimmel show this upcoming week. Be sure to tape it as I'm sure there will be a slew of quotes worth writing down.]

Hey all,

Anyone else get a phone call from a a nice first year at Penn? Very cool.

ANy idea when Fin. Aid offers come out?

Anyone have the new match list? The 2003 I've seen is Yale, which someone posted a few days ago (they did pretty well it seems).

Re: apartments... I know we'll be starting in early August.. are their typically vacancies in West Philly Apt.s at that time? In Boston, its more typical that June-Aug. is 'summer sublet time' then permanent (year long) moves take place in late august... I definately dont want to have to sublet for a month then move again... once from Boston to Philly is plenty for me. Moving sucks.

Hey, I'm still totally stoked for Upenn!

Cheers,

Tom

Bump.. We Penn kids must be the sexy, brooding, quiet types 😎

Cheers,

Tom

It's settled...

I'm living in a nice place in the Art Museum area. Great location, great apartment, and less than two miles from the med school. I'll probably rent out a parking spot on the med school campus so that i can park and drive without fear of getting ticketed everyday.

CATCH? I'm living with my sister, who's a resident at St. Christopher's. My sister and I are on good terms and all - don't get me wrong - but has anyone been in this situation before? Any possibility of tension not normally seen with a regular roommate?

Regardless...I'm still pumped for Penn! I have college friends, HS friends, family, a girlfriend who'll be there in 2 years, and the best medical school in the world all in one city! Penn Preview, here I come!

ps - anyone know the relationship between CHOP and Penn? I think that they're different entities even though Penn Med students do rotations through CHOP. However, I saw a map of the Med campus, and they're building this huge complex, and all it said was Penn/CHOP. What's the exact relationship?

Sweet! It's good to see that Iron Mike is still keeping himself out in the public eye, rather than quietly "fading into bolivian." Hopefully, Don King will be writing his lines. I'd love to see Mike try to pronounce "granditudilomentious."

I was never too clear on their exact relationship. While Penn had the nation's first hospital and med school, CHOP was started independently and became the nation's first pediatric hospital.
HUP and CHOP are now affiliated, and are even connected (they are right next to each other). So, students can do rotations there, and it is where you do your peds residency if you decide to stay within the Penn health system. CHOP and HUP do, however, have different CEOs, although I believe they are both under Penn's Board of Trustees.
The new building is going to have increased hospital space, but also will have a lot of research room for faculty at both CHOP and HUP.

BUMP!!!

Ya Penn!!

My friend and I are looking at housing now... we're coming down to apartment shop in two weekends... I've spoke to a few realtors who have nice places around 42-44th st.

Oh, and I sent in my load forms yesterday... I guess I'm officially in a ton of debt now😀

cheers,

Tom

hey kids!... i'm joining the party... i was at second look but wouldn't know if i met any of you... dr. chooch, are you a baseball player?... i think i might have talked to you about it... anyway, i'm as excited as everyone else to start in the fall... anyone else hopping aboard? 🙂

Yo shik, welcome! I actually used to be a baseball player in high school??? I decided to give that up though, for the best sport in the world: Rowing. 😎 So that might not have been me...who knows. In any case, I prolly talked to you at some time over the course of the revisit. I was probably the tallest guy in the place...that's usually how people spot me. 😉

Congrats on making the decision to come to Penn over that school down in B-more. I am waitlisted at Hopkins (upper tier) but Penn is just a better fit for me. Everyone seems happier there, the curric is better, and I love Philly...and oh yeah, my girlfriend's gonna be in Philly too. 😀

There have to be more people out there who are coming next year, where are you guys?? Is anyone still deciding about housing? I'm probably living with one of the dudes I met at revisit. He's coming down in a few weeks to Philly to look at houses to buy, but we may end up living in an apartment, who knows.

What are you people gonna do about cars. Is anyone bringing one? I don't really know what to do on that one. Philly isn't the most car-friendly city, not that many cities are.

Hey Dr Chooch...

I'm in almost the exact situation.. I am (was, as of a few days ago) upper tier waitlist at Hopkins, but I decided that I just have too good a thing shaping up at Penn to give up what with a killer curric. and family and girlfriend in Philly. After a great experience with my senior research thesis, I'm actually considering applying MD/PhD internally next year.

I plan to have a car around... some Penn housing website I read said that parking is plentiful in some of the neighborhoods in west philly.. I'm definately buying a Club though🙄

So, I had to miss Penn Preview b/c my thesis paper was due that friday... anyone want to fill me in on the dirty details?

Oh, any other serious Ultimate Frisbee players out there?

cheers,
Tom

Penn med has a team and gets real into it. I am a first year and never played in any games with them, but once in a while I would throw around with them before they got in the serious game mode.

The UPenn club team was stacked this year.... they actually went to the National Championship tournement down in Austin, Texas.. I don't think they did so hot, but hell, still one of the top 16 teams in the Nation. I haven't heard about the specific med school team, but I know that a bunch of ex-college players pick up most friday afternoons.

It's gonna be fun regardless

Cheers,

Tom
