oneironaut

I'd like to get some guess about the tiers of the Penn waitlist.

Lets try a super un-official and unscientific poll, just click the appropriate catagory, let me know if the poll needs to be changed.

You need not vote to see the results, so please don't vote twice.

(if i recall right) - i like how they say that the besides the tiers, the wait list is unranked... whatver though i guess- so much for that 'top' of the list category info that they ommitted

maybe someone should call and ask how many people are in each grouping...since the website obviously gives false information.

I don't think they'll tell how many people are in the tiers, I've asked. I don't think the website gives false information, what makes you say that?

My letter was worded "the very top...of tier 1" and I got off the waitlist last thursday, so for me, the category to which I was assigned ended up proving correct and honest!

Yea Penn! Needless to say, i'll be there in the fall!! :D

Thats right darn it, I'm just gonna keep on bumping this 'till some deep empty spot in my soul is summat' filled.

GrRrrRrRrrrRrrr

bump (for oneironaut)

BTW, what's an oneironaut?

Dream-Explorer :)

Thanks Incendiary! Saved me the embarrasment of doing it myself ;-)

bump for Entropy, I swear.

I'm kind of ashamed when more then half the thread is me. . . but 30 something ppl have voted.. maybe ya'll could post a word when you vote, to bump the thead and save my dignity eh :) ?

Has anyone else heard from the waitlist since may 15th?

wow!! 42 people on sdn alone are on the upenn waitlist? that must mean this is a huge waitlist!!

Is Penn going to "trim the fat" off their waitlist this month? (i.e. reject hundreds of people.)

Just got accepted off the waitlist today. I'm so excited! (I was in the top of the first tier category.)

See you in the fall Dr. L ?!?! :D

Dreams do come true!!! I'm so happy for you, Dr.L.

Did you get a phone call or find out through the mail?

Sorry, for not replying, I just graduated this weekend! I found out that I was accpted by a phone call and got a fed ex the next day. I'm definitely going to be at Penn in the fall and can't wait. Good luck to everyone and feel free to pm me if you have any questions.

does that mean that 2nd tier has almost no chance? I talked to some one who was in the 1st tier last year and apperently they didn't even get to her...

I was accepted off the waitlist today. I was simply Tier 1. Speaking with Ms. Sheffler, I got the impression that one of the crucial factors in my acceptance off the waitlist was repeatedly contacting her and the admissions office about my continued interest in the school.

Congratulations Chicago dude!!!

Chicagodude I PMed you.

I was on Tier 1 of the waitlist and Ms. Sheffler called me a few days ago. I'm not sure if she was going to accept me, but I had returned her call to tell her I withdrew my application. I just want this to be over!! And I love Columbia, so I ended the torture. Hopefully this helps someone still on the waitlist. Good luck

Congratulations chicagodude! I agree that my continuing interest through letters and e-mails helped me get off the waitlist. She wanted to make sure that I definitely wanted to be at Penn (which I know 100% that I do.) She didn't just call and tell me that I was accepted. She gave me a lot of opportunities to find out more about the school so that I wouldn't have to make a rushed decision.

Congrats Chicagodude!!

I'm happy/relieved to hear the waitlist is moving...I couldn't stand it so I just put in a call to Gaye -- hopefully she'll call back with some good news for me?!?

OMG!!! Gaye just called me back and, after asking if Penn was really my top choice, said 'ok, I'm going to change your status to an accepted student right now.'

I think I'm going to hyperventilate....

I think I'm going to hyperventilate....•••••THAT'S A GREAT STORY!!!!!!!!!

Mine was decidedly less climatic. . .

I was admitted on 5/2 but didn't know because instead of calling me, Gaye FedEx'd the letter (did not call) and FedEx came to my apt. twice but
couldn't deliver because I wasn't there to sign for it -- I thought it was this stupid part I needed for my mp3 player. So, finally, on the putative decision day (Gaye told me she'd try to tell me by this day), May 6th, I found out because I was miraciously home when they came for the FINAL drop off -- lord knows what would have happened had I not been home sleeping off a bad hangover!

So. . . because of that, I had like 2 days to fill out the paperwork and because I was so paranoid, I filled it out, wrote out my check, and found the drop box that was open the latest in my area (8pm) -- when I arrived (7:59pm), the FedEx guy was pulling away and I began chasing after the van. Fortunately, it had to stop at a light and I caught up to the van and managed to hand it off to him.

Then the relief and enjoyment set in!

Seems like ages ago and it was less than a month ago!

Inanna -- congratulations and I will see you in the fall, right ???????? :D :D

i just got the call from gaye too! this seems to be a good week for upenn waitlist movement. i'll see you guys this fall!

Oh, I think we're going to get along well, Fly, that sounds just like something I'd do. (Betcha sweet ass I'll see you at Penn in the Fall!!! and boy, does it feel good to be able to say that!)

Congrats to you, too, Chouette

Yep, I think I'm gonna have a nasty hangover tomorrow morning...

Hey guys,

I'd like your opinion. I've so far written Gaye twice, and made about three phone calls (but haven't spoke with her). So, 5 attempts to contact her and attest my desire to go to Penn. I was planning to send her a couple of emails over the next few weeks.

Does anyone think this is too much, or is this in line what you guys have done? I'm just afraid of becoming annoying.

Let me know please, thanks.

Congratulations to everyone moving in the list! Yeepii!!!

Do you mind letting us know which tier you were on?

And is there a directly line to Ms. Sheffler? or do i have to go through the office? I sent a few letters already but haven't tried the calling method.

again, happy for you and hope that more good news to come!

I just called the office (anonymously), and the person that I spoke with me told me that they expected very very little movement on the waitlist this year and that there have been very few withdraws. But she also added, to help me maintain my optimism, that "stranger things have happened"

anyone hear a similiar story?

Waitlist Offers in June: 32
Waitlist Offers in July: 6
Waitlist Offers in Aug/Sept: 0
Total Waitlist Offers: 38

So. . . last year they took 38 off the waitlist and I can't believe that it would be that different this year. But who knows, yield %s do change and maybe with all the AMCAS problems, their yield was higher. . .

I'm grew up in Tustin, where I am now, but I also lived in San Luis Obispo for 14 years. How 'bout you?

I don't think that's too much. I must have written Gaye 5 or 6 letters (the first one a letter of intent) and called at least once before to the front desk. Then I spoke to her this week and got my acceptance over the phone! So, I wouldn't worry about being overly enthusiastic - I actually think that this would actually help you stay in the running. They are looking for applicants that really really really want to go to Penn, & even on the phone Gaye didn't say I was in until I said I would absolutely go if admitted.

Penguin-

I was regular Tier 1. I would recommend calling the main line & asking to speak with Gaye. When I did this, they left a messager with her & she called me back the next day. I would definitely recommend calling her directly - the people at the front can only put a note in your folder that says 'continued interest', but she's the one with all the power.

hope this helps!

I lived in LA for most of my life! However, I am much more of an east coaster at heart (New Yorker by blood). :)

What are you guys doing with your summers and when are you moving to Philly ???? :D

Congratulations chouette and inanna!!! I definitely recommend to waitlisted people to do whatever you can to let Gaye Sheffler know that Penn is your first choice. For the people already accepted, do any of you know where you are going to live next year or where most med students live?

Dr. L
I was an undergrad at penn, and I know that most of the med students live downtown in Center City. There are several popular apartment buildings one being at 2400 Chestnut (one of my friends starting penn med in the fall is living there). Any building between 18th and 24th on Walnut, Chestnut, Locust or Spruce is convenient. Other nice places to live are in Society Hill or Old City, but they're further from campus. The West Philly scene is mostly undergrads. Hope this helps. Have fun, it's an amazing campus!

thanks! Do you know anything about the PENN shuttle bus?

I've only taken the shuttle west from 33rd st and it was very convenient (runs every 10 min or so). I'm not sure about eastbound shuttles though. I'm sure that they have a schedule and map on the penn website (www.upenn.edu). It really is the best way to go b/c SEPTA is expensive, dirty and unreliable. There's also LUCY (Loop through University City), that might be helpful too.

Hi everyone. Congratulations to all who have been accepted. About the shuttle, I also went to undergrad at Penn. Although I never used it when I was there, the shuttle runs East from several locations on campus up to 20th street (you can tell the driver where exactly). It leaves every 15 minutes from campus so it sounds like living in center city will be easy.
Hope that helps and I will see you in the fall.

thanks for the information!

I, too, really appreciate the helpful info you've provided. I went to www.philadelphiaweekly.com and found a number of listings along with several links to apt hunting agencies.

I think I'm going back there on the 11th to (hopefully) find a place.

Also, do you know how the white coat ceremony works? My parents and grandparents would like to be there, but I don't know if 'outsiders' are invited, do you?

It seems to me that it's a real 'family pleaser' and that having family there is integral to the whole thing.

My dad's a doc and I know he's coming in. I love him but part of me doesn't want to worry about entertaining family the weekend after orientation begins. . .

Does anybody agree ?!?!

PS: It's Friday August 16th at 2pm !

I actually got to speak to Ms. Sheffler yesturday. She told me that there is ver little movement this year and that they are expected to accept less off the waitlist because of it. (how "comforting!") but again, anything can happen. I am on the 2nd tier, so that's probably why the "little movement" talk. anyway, best of luck to every one. I mean after all, we will all be MD doesn't matter what school, right?
(yeah right.. sour grape coming out...)
