Penn Waitlist

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
A friend of mine got in off of the wait-list yesterday. That's the only news I've heard thus far.

How did your friend hear? snail mail, phone call, or email...

Got a phone call from Gaye Sheffler today asking me if I was absolutely sure that Penn was where I wanted to go. I said yes, and she's FedEXing me the letter.

I'm not sure exactly how he heard but when I saw him, he was holding an envelope from them. I think he was called, though, because he is a local Penn kid and so he just went to the office and talked with Ms. Sheffler.
Best of luck to all of those hoping for Penn; I'll be there in the fall.

The MD/PhD program is beginning to invite their waitlisted people back for second looks. If we really wanna come, they'll extend the offer.

I don't know what I wanna do now! Arrgggghhhhh

A little more info. The MD/PhD program told me that the medical school won't let them extend formal acceptances to anyone from the waitlist until Friday May 23rd. So I bet you won't see the MD waitlist move at all until then.

Edit: Or rereading this thread, perhaps the MD/PhD program is playing with my mind. I get this whole "If you really want to come, we'll accept you" vibe. Ah well, I do really want to come, so I'm going to go back to a MD/PhD second look and tell them so.

Good luck everyone!

Anyone have anything new to add?

no news on this end, DT. still wondering if there's been any large movement at penn, but there's not too much chatter on SDN about it (yet).

Penn waitlisted folks,

I'm new to this thread because I had been given a spot on tier 2 and hadn't really thought my chances were all that great. Ms. Sheffler just asked me to come down for a second look and I am trying to figure out what this means. Has anyone else heard of this type of invitation? I know there has been some talk of invitations to MD/PhD candidates, but alas, I am not one of them . . .

Wait - do you mean you received an acceptance? I'm on Tier 1 and haven't heard anything...

hey stuymers . . . did u send any update info, letters, or phonecalls to penn or did she just contact u out of the blue?

thanks . . . slynxy

The only update was two letters of rec written on my behalf. No, I have not received an acceptance . . .

i still havent heard of any significant movement. maybe we have to wait until June??

i just got a call from gaye wanting to talk about my "interest in Penn" she also said that the waitlists are starting to move.

have hope everyone! i can feel that good things will be happening soon! btw i received one of those top of tier 1 letters...

The waitlist is definitely moving. A friend of mine got the call a couple weeks ago. 🙂 Have hope everybody!

anyone called the admissions office lately to see what's going on?

Do you guys know what # you are on the waitlist? Do t hey even tell you?

Their official position is that the waitlist is unranked other than the tiers that are indicated in the letter. So no, they won't tell you, even though they have to have it ranked in order to figure out who they are going to accept.

Bonds, you hear anything about movement this year? ie) has most of it occurred or is it still going strong?

I know it is moving some, but I don't think a whole lot yet. Less than at this time last year. I will try to get the scoop as to how many spots are still up in the air and let you know.

Thanks Bonds, we really appreciate it

Here is what I know...
The waitlist has been moving for the last few weeks. Also, there will be spots available for at least another 10% of the class in the near future (15+ spots more).
Everyone try to hang in there. Penn is definitely worth the wait!

Also, if you personally want to get an idea of how many spots are left or what your chances are, the best thing to do is to write a letter (at this point probably better than an e-mail so Gaye doesn't get a million e-mails all at once) and send it to the admissions office to let them know you are still interested.
Good luck!

bringing it back up.

Anyone hear anything this week?

no news on this end. maybe next week?

any news? anyone called admissions?

I just wanted to let you know that I withdrew from UPenn last week. It was a really really really tough decision, but I wound up doing it. So anyways, there is probably one spot that opened up for someone. I hope one of you gets it! 🙂

Good luck to all waiting it out, Penn is an awesome place.

Dr Chooch,

where will you be going?

I decided to head down to Hopkins. LittleDrBob, are you waiting for Penn?

My story:
I called in 2 weeks ago, got Gaye shaffler randomly. She asked me about interest in Penn while going over my files. We talked a couple more times later in the week. She asked me to send in financial aid papers. A few days later, she gave me the amount of scholarship I would get if I got in and asked if I would be happy with that. I of course said yes. She called the next day and officially took me off the waitlist.
YAY!

popeye885,
Do you know where on the waitlist you were? I assume Tier 1. Were you one of those "at the top of Tier 1" people?

Congrats on the acceptance!

I'm extremely happy with the choice I have made. However, Penn was my first choice initially. I would definitely consider going there, if I got off the list.

ms.a:
I was in Tier 1, but I was not one of the "top of the list" people.

I called today and they said that they were "winding down with the waitlist" and "to expect correspondence in the mail shortly" which I assume is a formal rejection. They didn't ask for my name, so I assume that is a generic response from them. Awww well🙁

I received an email from Ms. Sheffler that said their class was full and there will be no more waitlist movement for this year. (by the way, this email was in response to one I sent her, it was not something that would have been sent out to everyone).

i wonder if anyone will drop their seat in july though?

heard today that gaye has recently told more than two people "that there has been virtually no movement this year". is this true??
