I just took a final and I think I just screwed up my final... unless I did this correct. I have a feeling this is incorrect, please review it:

Devise a synthesis from acetylene to (-CH2-C=CH-CH2)n
............................................................\
............................................................CH3

I did the following:

Acetylene + NaNH3... + CH3C=OCH3 (acetylen attacks)... + H+ (protonate O-).... + HgSO4/HgSO4/H20 (form ketone) .... +H2SO4 / heat (dehydrate OH) ..... + NaH (attack carbonyl).... + H+ (protonate O-).... + H2SO4/heat (dehydrate OH)... + (PhCOO)2 ---> target molecule

I think it takes paper to understand what the heck the above means but your help is SERIOUSLY appreciated. I think maybe something else might get attacked rather than what I am hoping.

Thank you so much 👍 👍

Sorry, I've been out of ochem for a while and I don't remember what the different reagents do so I can't help you with that.

I can offer you advise though. My philosophy with exams has been that once they are over there is no point thinking about it cause there is nothing you can do so just forget about it, because why stress yourself out longer than necessary? You can't do anything about it right now so don't waste your time with it.

I know its tempting to go back over your mistakes...but just let it go. Go outside and enjoy they day or drink a few beers. There is way more to life (even for a pre-med) than how you get from acetylene to somewhere else.

You'll be fine.

seriously---relax. It is over, and you no longer have any control over the result, so just stop thinking about it. Aren't there usually a bunch of steps in syntheses, instead of just adding everything at once? I never remember a one-step synthesis from orgo.
