I am a 4th year college student entering Dentistry School in the fall. I am very interested in a career in Periodontics. I was just wondering if anyone knows any specifics about the profession. Like how much Periodontists make, how many hours they work a week, and how demanding it is? Feel free to add anything you know about Periodontics. I will be very thankful for any information.

Perio, like all specialties, is difficult to get into. You have to be in the top 20% of the class, research, etc. I have heard its a great specialty if you like perio. but be careful of lawsuits.

It requires additional few years of training after dental school. The average income, obviously depends on many things, but generally make slightly more than general dentists.

I was just wondering how much Periodontists make becasue i shadowed an Orthodontist and he said Perio was the second highest paid specialist to Endo. He also said most Perio make more than most Oral Surgeons and Ortho.

Perio is a good field if you enjoy that type of dentistry. Periodontists follow their patients over many months, and this field can be frustating because the success of the treatment often depends on the patient's motivation. Right now, perio is one of the easiest specialties to get accepted into, but five years ago this was a very competitive specialty. Now, Endo is the hottest specialty because one can make 500-600K/yr. working 32 hours/week right out of school. Good luck with your future plans.
