Personal Statement/ Letter of Intent

I have a question regarding the letter of intent that we're supposed to wright for any specialty residency. How important are they? Do they even consider and read the letters you wright for the application packet? I've heard both ways from people I know and just want to get a good feel of how well it needs to be written since application time is coming up soon.
