Personal statement question

Ok, Im at the point where Im mentioning the program and how its a good match for me. I am also mentioning the prof I want to work with. SHould I write directy to the prof. since he will be reading it or not

"I would like to work with Dr XXX because....You are a leading researcher in the field..."

I would like to work with Dr XXX because.....He is a leading researcher in the field"

which one is correct to use?

I used he/she, because I often was talking about more than one person in my statement and didn't want to overpersonalize it, and because an admissions committee will be reading them rather than just the specific person.
